In my search for helpful metaphors for what could happen to us, I keep thinking of the 1930's.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Right now, I'm trying to understand what difference the Fed can make---obviously, since the "rescue" of Bear, the Fed has calmed things considerably (maybe, though, just for a few months).  Is it really possible, to just print enough money to paper over the crisis to buy enough time to have an orderly transition to something quite different?
