The Washington Independent: special needs

I understand the anti abortion issue. but is this the only reason that she is the vp candidate, because we have much bigger problems than this right now in the world Gov Palin! even in your own state! (Sen Stevens) get with the program! you are supposed to be the one representing "all" of us, though what I see is you representing your own selfish agenda. As a lifelong Republican and recent military retiree I will be voting democratic for the first time in my life, because it is obvious that the GOP has been "hijacked" by a right wing religious agenda.
  • Heather · 1 year ago
And the funniest part is, they have no intention of actually making abortion illegal. 7 of the 9 Supreme Court Justices are currently republican appointees, and yet...

I mean, why fix an automatic election issue.
  • Independent Mind · 1 year ago
I beg to differ with you Rich, and as a military vet as well, the left's stance has never made sense to me on this issue. It really comes down to they are against capital punishment but abortion is ok. So I have found it extremely difficult to reconcile with myself that I would be saying it is ok for a woman to take a childs life who cannot defend itself, yet their stance wants to blanketly say it's not ok to forefeit the life of a person who has made a sport of preying on the innocent. That is just not right,no matter how you "wordsmith" it.

Now I do agree there are other issues in this election, but as I have said all along, people really don't realize they have no choice. Disheartening isn't it. Neither are quite what they seem. I would not however call someone with 5 children saerving a "selfish" agenda when it comes to their policy on children. I'd say she has a much better view on this topic than you or I ever will. How many babies have you and I had between us? NONE. So let's stop talking for them, and let them talk themselves about it. We seem to want them to fill that roll, well, their opinions should matter for something when it comes to that.

This mother with a special need child is not buying into another one of Palin's lies. Sarah Palin is well known for going against funding for special need children. Now that she knows she's going to lose, she claimed she wants to fight for us. It's sick to see her use her child to get elected. Please, this woman has enough money to take care of her child. Why the hell would she care about other families? Sarah Palin never cared about us. She just care about making BS to win. If she really cares about special need children... she needs to go home and take care of her own child. As for her talk about pro-life, she needs to apply that to all the animals that she killed and is planning to kill. She needs also come up with some major funding to help all the homeless orphans in this country. Sarah Palin is a hypocrite! She is a money hungry embarrassment.
  • Independent Mind · 1 year ago
Vakay - Your comments are really disturbing. What is your "Solid" and "Morally Correct" alternative she
SHOULD HAVE pursued with her children while on the trail? A nanny? I find women who are really outspoken on other mothers approaches (short of child abuse issues) typically the ones that have the plank in their eye while complaining about the splinter in someone elses eye. Easy to always find fault with someone else, but never address your own inequites.

Enough money? Seems to have pretty humble roots to me, and while she has a nifty salary, I doubt her money is stretching much farther than mine. My six figure income doesn't go all that far anymore. And for us to presume we know wxactly why she would turn down funding for special needs children is ludicrous. Much like the big boys in the political arena. They love to point out who did or didn't vote for this or that. But they never talk about the spending bill attachments that pertain to things they could not vote for, but are only sold they didn't support the name on the bill.......a little short sighted vakay. I guress you'd be ok if she voted for the bill if it also said you were also required to house 4 illegal aliens in your home.

Why won't Sarah Palin release her medical records. What is so hard about releasing this information?

If Republicans are for shrinking government, then keep them out of my womb and respect my privacy. Remember it is the Rethuglicans who support domestic spying via the Patriot Act, spying on military personnel no less. Less government? How about more and restored privacy?
  • janemas · 1 year ago
The only Pro-Abortion candidate is Sarah Palin. Let me explain for those of you who have been so blinded by the obvious fact. Mrs. Palin is two-thirds Pro-Life which is in case of incest or rape a woman must be forced to bear a rapist's child, but when it comes to her own life Sarah Palin is Pro-Abortion. She "approves" any woman's right (notice not just hers) to kill a fetus in the 3rd trimester during labor if the life of the mother is in danger, making her 1/3 Pro-Abortion. If you combine all the stances she is undeniably PRO-CHOICE and favors the worst type of abortion! The problem with the approval of her Pro-Abortion choice is ungodly and cowardly coming from a so-called Christian woman and all women should be outraged. Anyone who tries to force their religious values on millions of families belonging to other religions or denominations is a hypocrite! How hypocritical can you be preaching love for god and when he calls you to heaven you opt to kill a fetus and escape death? Shame on you and all of you who have ignored this fact. There are more faith based supporters of Pro-Choice who will never cowardly kill their fetus to escape death if they truly believe their creator exists!
  • TXAParent · 1 year ago
And, janemas, it is your CHOICE to have the baby even if your health or life is at stake. To me, being pro-choice means that I respect your right to make that very personal choice.
  • janemas · 1 year ago
Again, I'm making an observation and placing myself as if I were a true Christian. That is not my real view to die, but it should be my choice. So why are Christians not upset over Palin wanting to kill a Fetus which they claim is a legal human being? I am PRO-CHOICE!
  • Andy · 1 year ago
Here's a question... just as there are no atheists in foxholes...how many mothers of rape impregnated teenagers oppose abortion? You're telling me if Todd Palin got Bristol pregnant that Sarah would want her to have the baby?

Palin supports having babies even in cases of rape and incest. Thats a fact
  • Andy · 1 year ago
Janemas I admire your decision to personally die rather than have an abortion. Wow! And that would be an interesting final outcome because there's no way your baby would be as crazy as you! Do you handle serpents and drink polson? You inbred hillbilly!!!!
  • janemas · 1 year ago
Andy dear, I'm making a point against Palin's false claim that she's PRO-LIFE and all those who ignore the truth that she is in fact Pro-Choice. You cannot be Pro-Life, call yourself Christian, and KILL a fetus, yet force others to bear a stranger's or your brother's, uncle's or father's child. Now that is insane. So I place myself as a TRUE CHRISTIAN and make a REAL argument against the cruelty of right-wing Christian nuts who want to impose their religious views on people they could care less for.
  • Andy · 1 year ago
    Gotcha
  • Andy · 1 year ago
Sorry about the hillbilly line, I was confused by your comment. I haven't really heard a person say that they would rather die than have an abortion... and I suppose it is philosophically noble, but you do have to admit that is not a widely held belief which does make it a hard sell as the belief of a true Christian (not that you're not) because Christianity is so widespread but that particular belief is not. Again I must say that the best part of your statement is that you believe as I do that imposing one's beliefs is patently wrong. The beauty of that is that everyone on Earth could disagree about religion and never step on each others' toes. So not to inquire too much, but what type of church does someone like you attend? I ask because you are a staunch and zealous Christian but you don't want to save everyone and convert them. I live in VA and everyone here who's a devout Christian makes a big point to commit some of their free time to actively and aggressively converting "non-beleivers".
  • janemas · 1 year ago
I'm agnostic. I believe what I see. My whole point is that all those people who call themselves pro lifers are hypocrites because if they believe like Palin that a pregnant woman can abort a fetus to save her own life then THEY are NOT pro-lifers and are in fact PRO-CHOICE. That was my main point. A real pro-lifer would opt to let the baby survive and allow herself to die. It's what every old school woman believed before these fake christians tried to invade our government. Seriously I wouldn't know what I would do if I had a choice to choose between my unborn or myself, but I wouldn't consider it crazy if a woman were to choose to die vs the fetus. At least she proves to be more a christian than Palin even if the woman was an atheist. Some people may think they lived a long life and prefer to give theirs up for another. But the next time someone tells you Palin is Pro-Life remind them she is NOT.

I actually knew a young couple a few years ago, who were expecting their second child right on the heels of the first. There were many problems with the pregnancy, she was hospitalized for a couple of months at the end, and there was a lot of fear among the drs. that she and/or the baby would not survive the pregnancy, let alone birth. They toughed it out, the mother lived, the baby was born, he had several problems like needing speech therapy, he was pretty fragile, etc. It was admirable the way they stood through it all. HOWEVER I am personally pro-choice and would not require that others facing the same dilemma make the same decision. But I am also "pro-life" in the sense that I would personally rather see us affirm the value of life than make abortion an easy out for irresponsible people - we could do that by making adoption a better option, by not stigmatizing accidental pregnancy, providing better social supports (e.g., child care options) to those who choose to keep their child. Obama said it best - no one is pro-abortion, we need to do a better job of managing the whole thing and that starts with an open and mature approach to sexuality in the first place.

My body, my business. The government or anyone else should have no say in what I choose to do with it and with what is inside it. She's cut funding for the Special Olympics in her state. In her speech she mad fun of funding for the study of fruit flies in France. if she really knew what she was talking about she'd realize the study of fruit flies are important in helping us find out more about autism and a number of other issues with the people on this planet and the planet itself. Why France? Because our country doesn't have the proper equipment and scientists to perform this kind of research. This was told to me by a friend who is in the science field.

So the next time she's going to give a speech about special needs children, she should read some of those magazines or books she couldn't remember the name of when being interviewed by Couric.
  • annie · 1 year ago
"My body, my business. The government or anyone else should have no say in what I choose to do with it and with what is inside it."

But what's inside you is a human being. So yes, the gov. can say what you do with it as it's purpose is to ensure LIFE, liberty.......for all. If we have laws to protect babies outside the womb, why can we not see that the laws also apply to those inside the womb. I don't see the difference!
  • RuffNReddy · 1 year ago
    It's simple.... Quite activism.

I did this already, and so have many of my friends, male and female.
Make an Honorary Donation in Sarah Palin's name to Planned Parenthood.

When the donation is made, PP will send a thank you card to Ms. Palin.
They ask for an address so, use the McCain base address (found on the website).

You help out Planned Parenthood and you sock it to Palin in on fell swoop.
There's no need to put women through the inevitable tortures of choosing, mentally or physically.
If you've never been on that path, you can't speak as if you've worn those shoes.

ProChoice is not about abortion as a birth control, it's about avoiding that possibilty, safely.
ProChoice activists want to avoid abortion as much as anyone else and by teaching sex-ed the hope is that it will never come to that.

There's no denying that we ALL discover sex one way or another but, in these modern times, with
all we know about disease, birth rates, over population, poverty, rape, incest, reproductive health...
why in god's name would we deny our own flesh and blood the right to this information?
To make them suffer? To tell them 'I told you so'? Because you're so uptight about your own sexuality that you can't accept that millions of other people out there have great sex, safely?

These are contemporary issues, let's get on the bandwagon and be responsible already!
For our kids and future kids, planned or not.
Awareness and responsibility. Because abstinence just isn't working.
    (Just look at Bristol palin)

lol it is obvious and I bet he's calling Bristol or Piper mommy. She uses the poor baby when he should be sleeping as a prop at 11pm during rally's and tv speeches. Is this sexist? No way but I know some christians who would be outraged, yet they are silent on this.
  • Coonsey · 1 year ago
Yes, I'd be curious about Palin's medical records. Has SHE ever had an abortion?
  • Valdanis · 1 year ago
Yes, and is that baby really hers? She didn't look pregnant at all at ...8 months into this pregnancy, but looked really round with one of her other children (at 8 months, as well). There are pictures available on the net.

So, in order to appeal to more voters, she should be more hypocritical still? I wonder what her views would be if she would be the one to be raped. I don't think she cares about anybody but herself. Just look at the pictures of her holding her new baby at the beginning of her quest for VP and at the recent ones. She seems to hold him tighter and warmer now, than he is useful to her to make her point... Shame on her! I wouldn't wish she was my mother! AMERICAN WOMEN, BE VEEEEERY AFRAID OF HER!!!

Ms. McGann: Funny that in an article highlighting the importance of language and choice of words, YOU have chosen to use the term "pro-abortion." No one is "pro-abortion." Many of us are "pro-choice" but may choose to NOT have an abortion, ever, while respecting that other women have the right to make that same decision for themselves. I've been in the pro-choice movement for years and have yet to meet anyone who is FOR abortion. We simply believe that it should be one of 3 options available to any pregnant woman or girl, and that she has the right to access any of these options, safely and freely, without judgment or fear of punishment, regardless of her socioeconomic status or any other mitigating factor. Let me repeat: No one is "pro-abortion." Hmm...that sounds familiar. Oh yes - Barack Obama had to make the same point during one of the presidential debates when John McCain used that same language. Please be more careful in future.
  • Laura McGann · 1 year ago
Hi Beth -- I'm careful to say someone is either "pro-abortion rights" or "anti-abortion rights." I think that is the most direct way to describe the issue.

"THE PILL" a book that documents the history of WOMEN Struggling for birth control features the work of pioneer in that movement Margaret Sanger. Right off the bat we hear her account of her mother giving birth to yet another unwanted child.Born as a result of a drunken husband coming home after cashing in his paycheck and having his way with his wife.
Sanger has umpteen stories of the sufferings and of women from botched backroom abortions.
Here in Canada, which some of you Americans may see from your yard,we have honoured Dr. Henry Morgentaler with the Order of Canada award. He went to jail for us. He had compassion for us and he performed safe abortions for us.
Did the Right to Lifers protest about such a prestigious award going to him? You betcha'!
One Catholic priest even handed back his own award as a protest even tho" his church recently had to apologize for the treatment of First Nations children at the Residential schools, rapes included.
Has Ms Palin never read this book or know of the history of womens' struggles with undesirable pregnancies?
What is so very disturbing to me is their belief that the state will somehow care for all these unwanted babies when America has so many children living in poverty. The world has a huge log of babies and children not being cared for, be it from war,AIDS, diseases, abandonment, family crises.
ProLIFERS should and could be putting their energies there.

If she was interested in children with special needs, why did she make fun of research for children with Autism. During her coming out policy speech, she rediculed research that has proven most valuable. Perhaps she thinks that Downs Syndrome is the only "special need" that needs attention.
  • independvoter9 · 1 year ago
She needs to go home and take care of her own kids. DO NOT DICTATE to other women how they should run their lives and make choices. Take care of you own first.
  • TuffCookie · 1 year ago
the problem with this woman is that she doesn't seem to take into account what kind of psychological damage raped women go thru. and then to have a kid they did not ask for? so that child can grow up and endure abuse (probably), and the ugly cycle will just continue. has she noticed how many people are just dropping their kids off in Nebraska at that hospital where they're ALLOWED to disown their kids? She needs to review the OTHER side of keeping unwanted children before she opens her legs. i mean trap.

Palin is vile. By using this phrase "commitment to a culture of life" is hog wash. It's insulting because she's implying anyone supporting abortion rights doesn't have a concern for life. Where is the concern for the mother? Rape absolutely is a valid reason for abortion. Health of the mother is a valid reason for abortion. Even a mother's inability to care for the child is a reason for abortion.

I think that having too many children is also vile. There are too many people in the world. This is religious fanaticism to the extreme. Having a child with Downs syndrome is horrendous. This child will have a terrible life. There is no reason to subject these poor fetuses to a incredibly horrible life.

An I say all this despite being adopted before Roe v. Wade.

I believe that the reason that Palin & Wasilla refused to pay for the rape kits is because rape kits have the Morning-after Plan-B pill in them. This proves that she will interfere with public policy in order to push these anti-abortion views on all of us- even underage rape victims immediately after she is brutally raped.

She would rather have a vile rapist go completely free than use a pill to prevent 2-cells from being implanted in a raped woman's uterus.

Sorry, but I'm a single, full-time working Mom of a son with Down syndrome, and I find this woman nauseating. Puleeze....gimme a break. Someone needs to inform her that actions speak louder than words. And the fact that she cut Special Olympics funding in Alaska from $550,000 to a mere $275,000 tells me everything I want or need to know. My son is now 17....Sarah's is only 5-6 months old. I don't care WHAT she says. Even with a 13-year-old nephew with autism, she has NO idea yet what is in store for her. Children with Down syndrome are wonderful, and I wouldn't trade my son for anything! But she has only just started on her journey and has a long ways to go, to say the least. And given everything and everyone else that this woman has 'put under the bus', I take her comments about special needs children with a grain of salt!

And the fact that we were both raised in an Assemblies of God church (but I am an Independent voter), well, I think she uses her faith as more of a tool than anything else.

Plus, I was trained as a professional model and, believe me, given this woman's background in 'pageantry,' she'll use whatever she can to get where she wants to go!

The pro-life movement would have met with much greater success in reducing the number of abortions in the 25 intervening years since Roe vs. Wade, if the had concentrated their efforts on providing support (both financial and facilities) for single moms. If Sarah Palin really wants to reduce the number of abortions, she should consider keeping a record of all of the support that she provides to her daughter, to enable Bristol to complete her education and care for her child, and make that degree of support available for all women.

Sarah Palin might be 'pro-life' but she does not believe in the government programs that provide a life for those children that are born into to straitened circumstances.

Hmmmm......I've always wondered how she knew she was going to have a Downs child unless she had amnio or CVS - both tests are done to see if anything is wrong with the fetus. Her knowing ahead of time WOULD explain keeping the pregnancy under her hat until the 7th month, since I'm sure she and her husband had to digest the news which must have been quite a shock. You gotta admit, one special needs child and one child in "Eye-rack" trumps one pregnant daughter if you're looking to not appear as a moralistic hypocrite. That poor daughter #2, I'll bet she'll be put on the pill or threatened with death not to spoil any "dreamed of" run for the Presidency in 2012!
  • janemas · 1 year ago
We had some what similar thoughts. I think her amnio test was done to see if her life was in danger cause of her age. If it were, she would have aborted it quietly and is why she stayed quiet till the 7th month. Remember she approves of killing a fetus to save her life.
  • Violet · 1 year ago
I'm no fan of Sarah Palin, but that's a bit extreme. Down's Syndrome can be visible in an ultrasound, which would then lead to other tests to confirm that. (There is a sort of fold of flesh at the back of the neck which can be seen.) In People, or OK or one of the magazines that did a profile on her after she was named VP she said she didn't tell any of her children about it - they didn't know until they saw him. Unbelievable.
  • janemas · 1 year ago
I didn't say or imply she had a test done to see if the fetus was Downs. I'm saying she wanted to know if her life was in danger so should could have a quiet abortion if it were. In doing the test she found out the unborn was Downs which is no threat to life. I know many women who are democrats, even atheists who keep their Down baby. She did nothing special, something she parades on the stage as if it is a Christian right-wing Republican value.

If her daughter was raped by a black man or a hispanic man would she allow her daughter keep the child or have an abortion. I would like to get an answer from every one who is pro- life
  • IUS · 1 year ago
Most definitely keep the baby. What crime did the baby commit? None. What crime did the father commit? Rape. It is completely unjust that the baby should get the death sentence (abortion) because of the crime of the father (rape). The abortion would not have undone the crime of rape. It would have just added another crime -- abortion -- a dead child.

Why interject govt policy in an issue that is intensely personal???     I have watched the way she whips that baby around. She will carry him across the stage, show the crowd and dump him on the other side of the stage. He is a prop;

Watch her body language with her daughters at the two hockey games for example. It's the Sarah show. The children are invisible, until they are needed in a photo op.

What is glaringly obvious is that these children have been neglected by their mother. Her oldest son Track abused alchohol and drugs, vandalized property and dropped out of high school. Bristol's own alchoholic adventures are well-chronicled in photos on my sp ace pages and the baby is seen being schlepped around late at night and dumped either with an aide or the two other girls who, if you will notice their body language, crave their mother's attention.

Why aren't the children in school? Is education a "value" that they just don't need up in Alaska? Where is a nanny? A private tutor, and aide or physical/occupational therapist for that sweet little baby?

Lastly, her personal story is suspicious. In every instance where she has climbed up the ladder, she has stabbed in the back each of her mentors, all the way to the top. If she were to serve as veep, I doubt seriously she will be looking to stay within the margins, but rather will do her best to marginalize her own boss.

Palin has yet to release her medical record, which she promised early last week. Today is Friday. The election is Tuesday. What are you hiding Sarah? Treatment for depression? Plastic surgery? The details of Trig?
