There are far, far, bigger challenges facing an Anbar-style engagement policy than warlordism (though that is also important). On a basic, level, the entire KLE model in Afghanistan is fundamentally broken. Further, Pashtuns and Arabs don't organize the same way, and don't begin and resolve conflict the same way, either. The two situations are too different to analogize realistically.

The Sons of Afghanistan? The Taliban claimed this title when they were originally formed... the US had better be very careful that it does not cause the whole country to erupt against its forces...that is when it will be humiliated as will its other allies... There can be no one militia - since the society of Afghanistan is far more fractured and divided than Iraqi society. The best solution would be the creation of regional entities within Afghanistan - self governing - all tied together in a loose federal mechanism to a broader entity. That way the inhabitants will have a stake in keeping each other in check and disciplining any one whom wants to bully the others...
