You've jumped the gun on this. Your reading of the script is incorrect. It should be read as: "29 trips intense trips over 12 years. To the front [AND] to the saddest parts of Africa." While perhaps poorly structured, this does not imply that Iraq is in Africa. It lists the countries he's traveled to, and then mentions two separate reasons for his trips, 1) to visit the front, and 2) to visit the saddest parts of Africa. The scrolling text also mentions a visit to Kosovo and Bosnia in 1999, which was also a "front" and not a "saddest part of Africa."

Iraq wasn't even a country anywhere - much less Africa - until 1921. That's when the League of Colonialists Welfare World Wide (aka the League of Nations)gave Lebanon and Syria to the French and Iraq and Palestine to England.
