Palin on Earmarks:’We Did Well!!!’

Started by washingtonindependent · 10 months ago

Digging through Wasilla’s municipal records is a lesson in the very essence of tedium. You’ve got pages of proposals to rename streets, assess sewers, build skateboard parks, buy lawnmowers, rent “pop” machines, carve snowmobile trails, congratulate high s ... Continue reading »

  • Beautiful.
  • This woman is the welfare queen of earmarks
  • The "reported today" link has an extra "http//" in it, causing it to not work.

    Excellent work on the story!
  • Great job. While you are there can you find out the disposition of her carwash? Was it sold, bankrupt or just closed?
  • Wow. This lady is just....amazing. Thanks Santa...I mean John McCain!
  • Republican heads must be about to explode trying to reconcile everything coming out about Palin, against everything they've been taught to believe for the last 30 years. If they weren't such self righteous busybodies, I could almost feel sorry for them.
  • They'll find a way to rationalize literally anything that comes out. Try: "It shows she understands how earmarks work. Who better to shake up the system in Washington!"
  • They already do. Earlier today I heard her described as a "flexible" politician and a "populist" who has only the needs of her constituency in mend. And of course we all know that reporting from the godless, masturbating liberal media is inflammatory and misleading.....

I swear if McCain and Palin actually win I will just go into hiding for four years.
  • Hiding hell, I am looking into citizenship in other countries.. We won't have America anymore with these two and the lobbyist. God help us.

  • They are all ready throwing around she is the kind of person you want to sit down and have coffee with.

Bush was this is the kind of person you want to sit down with and have a beer with.

Change a couple words and everything is fine. Change you can believe in.
  • People really can't possible vote for McCain and Palin in good conscience can they? Ick.
  • Can everybody that ain't a homo-sexual give Rerun Angel an Alaskan sized HELL YEA !
  • *Giggle*
  • Shame on you for bringing her earmark babies into this.
  • Sorry, forgot that it was taboo to bring up fact that Palin was Alaska's "earmark momma"
  • This is a nightmare for the country. What if these two frauds get elected?
  • Can we have more info. on the airport paving funds? How do we know it was an earmark? The feds routinely grant money to small towns for airport improvement projects. They are not earmarks.
  • Mike: You did well!!!
  • It would be informative if you can find out just what books she tried to get banned at the library.
    Thanks for all you do.
  • YES! Please tell me which works in particular she had a issue with that caused her to ask the librarian to resign.
  • Not that I am trying to mitigate Sarah Palin's vast experience in any way ... Still, just as an aside, anyone who has ever been involved in small town politics knows that the fights over "pop" machines and renaming streets can be really ugly and nasty. The record of the last local town meeting I attended would be entirely unprintable in any newspaper. Not to mention throwing things at each other. It's real war in these small towns. I guess those "pop" machine battles are basis of her claim to experience. I mean it's just a hop, skip and a jump from renaming a street to renaming a country.
  • LOL. A good friend of mine (city councilman) got escorted out of a city council meeting by the cops a few years ago (he's a republican BTW) in our town with a population of 4000. Made the papers in the closest big city (St. Paul - yeah where the RNC is right now). Don't even remember what it was about. Maybe GOPAC got to him....you know...got to teach republicans how to be republicans at the small town level....
  • Did you say "war"???

Don't pitbulls kill and injure especially young people and send them to he hospital?

Seriously, Cheney has been in Azerbaijan the past 2 days. Not sure of the true intent of that cretin, but wouldn't doubt if it was drumming up the support for a war of some sorts. As much as I cannot stand Cheney, does the GOP really think she can wage war with those godless commies like Darth Vader does? Seriously.
  • Crap the last time he was out of US he visited Georgia and then they invaded South Ossetia. Get ready for another military action.

"But David, wasn't she a model? Doesn't that score her a few points?" - Lew, Comments section

Someone has been calling Alaska Governor Sarah Palin a VPILF. I'll leave that one out there as it is.

I will not deny that Palin possesses some weird, intoxicating radiance. Illuminated by church-light, bathed in calm self-assuredness, possessed of creamy skin and strong thighs, she exudes a perfect olfactory blend of Eros, Thanatos, good clean girl's locker-room sweat, crisp linen, Shalimar, gunpowder, and moose-musk. No wonder John McCain can't resist her. She's the opposite of his meal ticket, his beer-baroness wife Cindy, with her famous trowel.

When I think of all the qualified, serious women in government who might make a good vice president - on both sides of the isle, mind you - I can only conclude that John McCain, as well as the Republican Svengali patrol that brought us the Original C-Minus Man, must have utter contempt for the people, and for the seriousness of higher office.

People who believe that government is always the problem and never the solution (thank you, Ronald Reagan) obviously cannot be trusted to make government work. After all, honest and efficient government would only hurt their ideology and create their own downfall.

Why Americans staff their government with people who want it to fail is the great mystery that the rest of the world can't fathom, and the Right wing's success at perpetuating their diseased ideology is a triumph of Orwellian manipulation. Only when things collapse around us and we find out what a Republican Utopia actually feels like to live in do we seem to come back to our senses.

Republicans famously denigrate the "reality-based community," as if reality were only an option, not a rule. Reality irritates them because it exposes their bankrupt morals and rampant greed, not to mention their gross incompetence.

Whenever reality cracks the paranoid, right-wing psychosis, when the treasury is finally empty and the cemetery full of our young brave dead, the people always return to sanity. And they always, always reject right-wing ideology.

If you love your country, you love the people. If you love the people, you want them to thrive, the middle class to be strong, the poor to be lifted from poverty, the rich to be held to a decent moral standard. If you love your country you are alive to the fact that we are all in this together and should care for one another.

If you love your country you do not turn it over to enormous corporations and foreign investment cartels, and you do NOT deregulate industries so that their CEO's can loot the common wealth with impunity. You do not wave the bible while robbing the poor.

John McCain used to agree, and before he jettisoned his integrity, he famously bucked the Evangelical trend in his own party. Regarding their multiple bigotries, he called the Christian Right "agents of intolerance." Today's McNasty, however, is a far cry from the McCain who partied with Busta Rhymes on MTV eight years ago, when he was a mere sixty-six year old presidential candidate. These days, he questions his opponents patriotism and chooses a running mate who vows to destroy women's reproductive rights as much as he himself once vowed to protect them.

An honorable patriot does not surround himself with lobbyists while pretending to be these very lobbyists' worst nightmare. True patriots do not flippantly commit our brave young men and women to toil in the lap of death when we "bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb-bomb Iran." True patriots do not hire consultants who wear thousand-dollar suits and smoke fifty-dollar cigars by the country-club pool while lecturing the rest of us about patriotism and sin.

And true patriots would never invoke Jesus' name to meet their power-mad, blood-lustful ends.

All this notwithstanding, if Sarah Palin invites the GTL out to the range for some smoke-and-hot-brass therapy, and a whiff of her come-hither, Miss Congeniality charms, you'll all have to forgive me.

    Because I'm going.
  • Hmmm.....well I can't fault you on that GTL, the Rerun Angel, liberal as she is, does own a very nice old Weatherby...
  • I really enjoyed this post!
  • Very well-written and entertaining!
  • Let me preface what I'm about to say by asserting my progressive cred and stating that I think Palin was a poor choice of a running mate for McCain. That said, I can't honestly say I blame her for doing her job as mayor. Part of her mayoral responsibilities would surely have involved securing funding for projects from as many legal sources as she could.

A direct link to Abramoff would be another matter, as would any illegal activity (like, say, attempting to use your influence to get your sister's ex-husband fired from his job during a custody battle).

But with respect to earmarks, it was her job as mayor to exploit them, and it was her job as governor to do away with them. Let's spend our time our time on something we can really nail her on.
  • But McCain and her lied about not receiving earmarks. That is why this is a story. Their "Maverickness" is in question.
  • No, they did not necessarily lie about the airport money she mentions in the margin. I, like Anon, am a progressive and in no way supportive of the 'other' party. And I am delighting in this shitstorm called Sarah. But I have worked in county government - SMALL county gov't - and the transportation department routinely applies for grants to make improvements to roads, transit systems and airports. They make their application, work their way up the priority list, get funded and complete the project. The FAA is the usual source for airport money, with smaller amounts coming from the state. So her notes about the money for her airport has not yet been proven to be an earmark. An earmark is a specific line item in an appropriation bill to a specific entity, like Wasilla. I'm not yet seeing this in the evidence discovered so far. I say all this because it does our cause no good to run wild with this half-assed reporting. And until I see further info. provided by Mr. Lillis, I must reject this piece of news. The bloggers are starting to jump the shark on their own frenzied momentum. Discretion is the better part of valor.
  • link this and help it go viral. the hits just keep on playing.
  • Wow, the synergy between McCain and Palin is just awesome! What a helluva pick! What a team! What a collosal cockup!
  • I don't understand. It's not uncommon at all for mayors and governors to redistribute America's money back into America, supporting its infrastructure or whatnot.

There is nothing wrong with earmarks themselves.

Where is your outrage over Obama and Biden's abuses of earmarks?

Obama himself, got money for his wife's hospital. Soon after, her salary skyrocketed. That's not the kind of change we need, Mike.
    In contrast
  • what's the source for this John? please site it as I would love to see this. getting money for a hospital isn't change we need? or Michelle Obama getting a raise is change we need?
  • No matter how many times you repeat the phrase "executive experience", it doesn't make it true. The facts are not as easy to hide if the media will expose it. Now everyone should keep forwarding this and all the other controversial issues, like her wacky church, to the major news organizations.
  • It is a Mayor's duty to ask for whatever monies she can get. It is the responsibility;ty of those who dole out the money to make sure they are being fiscally responsible.

When Palin was a Mayor, she did her job well. She asked for money

As Governor, Palin does her job well. She reigns in earmark/pork barrel spending. Not every person in her position does. She has chosen to be fiscally responsible with her budget.

Is that really that hard to understand?
  • By the way, I heard that McCain was tortured as a POW.
  • Where did you hear that? It is news to me, I guess he really doesn't want to make a big deal of it, so he keeps it on the lowdown.
  • She is a phont thru and thru like all her other Republican bretheran!

    Ozkar
  • As someone who lived and worked in AK for many years...I can not wait for the rest of the US to focus on the shoddy politics and players in the most beautiful and corrupt state in the republic. Keep mining these little nuggets and the truth will out.
  • Sarah Palin: QUEEN OF THE EARMARKS.

PLEASE everyone see this becomes her new name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Maybe "Welfare Queen--of Earmarks!
  • Larryman: And the real story is this: She taxes the oil companies and -- INSTEAD OF USING THE MONEY TO BUILD INFRASTRUCTURE -- she hands out $1200 checks. to purchase her popularity. THEN TURNS TO THE REST OF AMERICA TO PONY UP EARMARK MONEY TO BUILD ALASKAN INFRASTRUCTURE.
Using taxpayer money to buy popularity? Not too shocking, is it?
  • A McCain spokeman, when presented with the facts that Wilessa had massive earmarks ($1K+ per capita) under Mayor Palin, claimed that the town has always relied heavily on earmarks, and Palin was very disillusioned about this and this is part of how she became a reformer.

In reality, the town had virtually no earmarks until she took over and hired a *lobbyist with close ties to Ted Stevens*. It then became one of the highest earmark per capita localities in the nation.

Yep, a real reformer. Not business as usual at all. The ad practically writes itself.
  • Every aspect of Palin's "reformer" credentials is proving to be a phony invention in a year when Republicans are desperately trying to fabricate "change" candidates. Palin is a petty, vindictive small-town politician, addicted to pork, abusive of power and capable of lat-out lies about her record when challenged -- by reporters or ethics investigators.
  • Don't you know it's sexist to ask questions about conflicts between a candidate's statements and her record?
  • Only if they are a Republican woman.
  • HAHA! Love it!
  • It’s revelations like these that can quickly erode candidates’ maverick reputations.

I'd like to believe that, but our media culture is probably more interested in Palin's "star power" and political horse race coverage- "did this help McCain?" than in actual performance in office.

How do you think we ended up with an incompetent like Bush?
  • The idiotic contempt for municipal governments by bloggers is astounding. This is not a point in defense of Palin--I think she's contemptible--but I'm sick of reading about how silly local politics is. I think municipal government is fascinating, and certainly more important to people's daily lives.
  • The republicans appear to live by the creed that if you say something enough times it makes it true. They haven't given up on calling McCain a "Maverick" even though there is no evidence of that and they will continue to call Palin a "reformer" in hopes that the average, uninformed voter will take it to be true. It is our ultimate duty to reveal the truth about both of them.
  • Thanks for the hard work. Also "the kind of stuff that makes small towns run, but leaves you glad that someone else is running them" is an excellent line. I congratulate you on a well deserved link from Atrios.

    You did well !!!!
  • For a woman with a lot of nasty words and not much resume, this is rich!
  • THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, SARA PALIN !!!!!

You have so energized me I can hardly sit still long enough to write!
While I WAS contributing and writing letters in THIS race, (and promise to do even more) I realize I wasn't doing enough for WOMEN, so I've now committed to a minimum of 100 hours over the next several weeks to work for not just one but TWO WOMEN:
Kay Hagan running for the State Senate in NC ... and BEV PERDUE who is running for Governor.

They're all DEMOCRATS, but it's the best I can do, sweetie. Thanks a bunch!
  • Bring up all her inconsistencies and also abuse of power. Palin talks from both side sof her mouth. The reason she got away with her lies in Alaska is because it sis still a small town "state" and people simply trusted this Evangelical born-again with a hidden agenda. Palin must be exposed.
  • What has Global Warming Brought Us?
A Generation of Vipers: Now Indigenous to Alaska?

I am speaking solely for myself, here. Until now I’ve kept my politics to myself, but enough is enough. What is most painful is that I yearn for a National Representation that will “allow us to disagree, without being disagreeable”.
Yet, all of us have boundaries. And when one observes video clips displaying the GOP’s finest: at one moment espousing their allegiance to the strictest of fundamental Christian Values, and in the next moment smirking, giggling, laughing, at their opponents illnesses (cancer) and resorting to gutter terms such as bitch. It’s impossible remain silent.
    Please see:
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/31/palin-...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKkydrUnBZE&eurl...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9AIDRGzUAw
Not since Edward R Murrow’s film clip of Joseph McCarthy's sinister smirk --as he smeared Adlai Stevenson's name with Alger Hiss --have I heard such venomous disrespect for a political opponent as shown by Sarah Palin. (Do view the URLs above).
Sarah Palin, the (truly) presumptive Republican Party VP candidate, is a neighbor of Lyda Green; both are from Wasilla, Alaska. Lyda Green , like myself is a Senior Citizen and Cancer Survivor. Lyda Green is a devout Christian, a Republican, a Baptist, who has served Alaska since 1995. How Lyda Green has become the object of such verbal abuse is beyond me. This video completely belies any claim Sarah Palin has for respecting Family Values, Love of Jesus Christ, or respect for Women's rights. Plausibly she's joining her mentor John McCain who mocked and slandered Hillary Clinton with the same terminology. (See the URL below).
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8XBlxvA7AA
How, as a Self-Proclaimed Standard for Family Values , Sarah Palin can simply stand by and giggle, at such abuse painfully reminds me of the cruelty of the scorners at an ancient Roman Crucifixion. Sarah Palin, your adolescent giggles at the expense of a cancer survivor are the heart, the soul of blasphemy. Jesus said "Father Forgive..." Yes, Father Forgive, --because as a Cancer-surviving Senior Citizen it's beyond my human capacity to do so.
Sarah Palin’s childish giggles about cancer completely undermine any message that she has proclaimed for her respect for Human Life. How she can claim that she loves her Down’s syndrome child then giggle about her neighbor’s cancer is beyond my comprehension. It speaks to a lack of compassion, and betrays a hypocrisy beyond belief. Klansmen can love one neighbor and hate another, true Christians cannot. Sarah Palin can abuse her power of office to force the firing of her sister’s ex, Mike Wooten; a true Christian could not.
The United States deserves both a President and a Vice President with sufficient Judgment, Courage, and Loving Temperament to steadfastly reject pejorative sexist, racist, age-discriminating, vindictive actions and remarks. A person who demeans and giggles about a cancer survivor is not worthy of any public office for any American Party. I have not in my lifetime observed anyone less temperamentally qualified to serve in any capacity.
If Sarah Palin is truly as John McCain proclaims, his “Partner and Soulmate”; this is not just a marriage of convenience to be consummated in the rape of the Alaskan countryside for the sake of the oil companies. The Union of these Soulmates is a dark scene from the Grand Guignol. I’d always considered the ancient myths of evil souls as superstition, but Martin Buber’s Rabbi Israel Ben Eliezar is right, there are Evil souls threatening our World and they are masquerading in the GOPs’s quest for the presidency.
Please forward this e-mail to your friends. Protect our Senior Citizens. Protect those who face the challenge of life-threatening disease. Bring an end to the Hypocrisy, and in this case outright scorn and Blasphemy of the GOP leadership.
    Dov King
  • Exactly. I saw those videos a couple of days ago and was simply floored how a "Christian" could not only just sit back and say nothing to those two radio nuts; but also giggle and cackle about what they just said.
Same for John McCain when a supporter asked "how do we beat the bitch?" McCain basically ignored what she said.

I am not a religious man, but I do not "hate" those who are religious. But what really, really upsets me is when people who call themselves "religious," people who call themselves "Chrisitans," do not follow what they profess to believe in. It is hypocrisy beyond belief. Even if they are atheists or agnostics, not belonging to any particular religion, he fact that she still cackles and doesn't say anything shows to me that she is a very callous individual.
  • One other thing.....she made reference in that speech last night to Obama's off the record comments about "guns and religion."

These videos need to get out there and reported on; they need to come out in an Obama ad!
  • Love the Ghandi quote:
"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ.."
    Sez it all.
  • That first youtube link you put up has been taken down due to "copyright infringement claim made by someone."

Was it the same as the 2nd youtube link?
  • I have it @ http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=pal...

similar same adolescent giggles, cackles, content, slime
  • Sarah Palin is a liar on many issues; claims about opposing the Bridge to Nowhere which she heartily supported and then KEPT the EARMARK FUNDS after she changed her mind about the bridge because it has become a political liability. She reaped earmarks and was criticized by McCain for being such an earmark hog. The oil pipeline she claims credit for hasn't even begun to be built and may not be built for many years. As Mayor of Wassilla, she left that tiny village $27 million in debt! $27 million is an incredible debt for a village with less than 7,000 people.

She also lied when she said she supported funding for special needs kids. She CUT funding for special needs kids by 52 percent. She also cut funding for unwed teens by 20 percent. I guess that was before her daughter got pregnant.

She lied about Obama's legislative achievements saying he hadn't sponsored or co-sponsored any major piece of legislation when, in act, he sponsored 820 laws in Illinois. Authored 152 bills and co-sponsored of 427 in Washington. The 2007 Ethics Reform bill alone cannot be dismissed as simply non-existent.

Not to be left out. Wassilla is the meth capital of the country! Nice job, Mayor Palin. Yo're a typical Republican liar and hypocrit who sounded sarcastic, belittling and condescending last night.

Thanks but no thanks to Sarah Palin.
  • To be fair Federal money for such as things an Airport Paving Contract usually comes from the FAA's AIP (Airport Improvement program) funded by the Airport and Airway Trust fund which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources. Not strictly an earmark then, since such projects have to undergo evaluation and authorization by a Federal Agency and are not just a line item in some budget bill.

    http://www.faa.gov/airports_airtraffic/airports...
  • Who cares what they dig up this lady is a difference maker. She has my vote. Oh I mean McCain has my vote. HA
  • You're onto smething. If I didn't know better I would think Sarah is at the top of the ticket.
  • What I love is the grass roots American spirit that is going after republican new ploy (Palin)... with a community organizer approach!!!! America is freedom loving and GOP's fundamental roots is about control, fascist style control, with military buildup, religious zealism, condemnation for all that think outside their reality.... this is about as anti-american as it gets... yet here on american soil we've tolerated these hitler wanna bees..... who claim their superiority in that God's will is behind every action they do... whether it be killing the 'enemy', destroying the environment, spreading hate and fear... of course, all things that God loves to stand behind!!!! Like this Palin, who condems America and Loves Alaska... yet takes our earmarks, until politics said stay clean for a year or two... we'll groom you for bigger things!
  • Eh. I can't stand Palin or the GOP, but this is hardly damning. It's all about switching roles from mayor-booster of Wasilla to candidate-for-VP, and it's a pretty typical and excusable shift in attitude. I'm much more interesting in and concerned about the fact that she was nearly recalled as mayor for firing the chief librarian and police chief for not supporting her politically, as well as that business with the state trooper/brother-in-law and the ensuing corruption investigation.
  • She did a lot better than we did in Arizona! McCain has grabbed zero $$$ for the entire state , let alone a city of 5,600. But she still managed to take over a balanced budget with zero debt and leave them in a big, big hole debt wise! Good old conservative values! Can you spell hypocrite?
  • You nailed this one,Robert!!
  • With the recent study that 25% of teenagers have sexually transmitted diseases, Sarah palin still opposes sex education in schools!!!!!! She is just not in touch with the average teenager. The prove is obvious
  • Let's get this out there!!!!!!
Unfortunately, we do live in an era of the sound bites. Republicans get in line and spew out the talking points. Uninformed citizens eat up this easy to digest mode of information gathering. Honestly, many independents and working class democrats are unaware of the ear-mark information and would find it compelling.

Why are we sitting around? What are we waiting for? Where are the ads -- the Republicans were running those horrific Hillary ads during the convention -- we are missing an opportune time to stop this train from leaving the station.

Let's characterize Palen for what she is -- a "values politician" with an agenda.
  • Someone needs to go on TV with a soft and soothing voice and say something like: You want to think she's a fine person. You don't want to suspect she's just another player out to pull the wool over your eyes. It gets tiring after a while, hearing them say one thing while they do another. But Sarah Palin is not the person she says she is. ...

And lay it out in lavender that she's a person for whom truth and integrity depend on which way the wind is blowing.
  • I think you could go professional doing such ads. But really how do you get through to people that are brain dead?

From an outsider's view the USA psyche is split down the middle - between sanity and insanity. Personally I think there is one extraordinarily brilliant person who snuck inside the insanity of the Republican mind and laid it open for all sane people to see, even as the Republicans lapped it up as primal food for their deluded feeding frenzy.

This person is either a brilliant hero or (implausibly) an extremely deluded fool. I fear the Republicans would tear him to shreds if they knew him to be the former.

(If this is obscure it is because I want to complement someone who has done a brilliant service to his nation from the centre of the Republican voice. Yet who, to continue his work, must remain anonymous.)

The converted cannot be saved (or even see what has been done) but everyone else can see their insanity; thanks to one person. I salute you.
  • Bad media!

When do you think her neo-handlers will let her speak to the press? Maybe they have not finished giving her (her) opinions yet?

Great job media maybe there are a few honest reporters out there.
  • Those earmarks were for reasonable projects you negative emotional bozo's. It's called Infrastructure and it is exactly what America needs from coast to coast and it creats jobs! Geeeze...
  • Good point. America needs infrastructure. But the money shouldn't be handed out willy-nilly to the loudest voices and the wiliest lobbyists. For example, does the airport in Wasilla need paving more than the Minneapolis bridge needed fixing. Infrastructure funds should be disbursed on the merits, not on political connections.
  • McCain as maverick reformer? It must be easy to pass campain finance reform and claim to not accept lobbiest money when your married to a bank named Cindy "Budweiser".
  • What better way to catch fish in a barrel than with minos.

You think Chris Angel could turn a rhino into a mino before your very eyes.

    Republican in name only "RINO"
    Maverick in name only "MINO"
  • Earmarks might be a dirty process but I would try to take advantage of them for my constituents if i was mayor. But i couldn't in any consciense claim i was a reformer.
  • whats wrong with the media? they are scared to death to say anything about palin ever since they were accused of sexism. i thought they were pros. are they intimidated? affraid they wont get a seat on mccains bus? they are gushing all over about palins speech. its like a schoolyard crush. they are cowards. its the vice presidents office at stake. our country. she is not ready and they all know it. my god get some b"lls
  • Good point bill doc. Can't understand that every time the media gets "chastised" by the GOP, they back off. Maybe we wouldn't even be in Iraq if they would have done their job!
  • Good point bill doc. Can't understand that every time the media gets "chastised" by the GOP, they back off. Maybe we wouldn't even be in Iraq if they would have done their job!
  • Nothing new here for Republicans! If the truth doesn't work, tell the big lie. They think we're all stupid enough to believe that we are their "dear friends."
  • Amen!
  • Sure they may have been reasonable projects, but if your MINO McCain blasted those same earmarks as questionable pork spending in 02" how can they win you the VP nod in 08, the money is beyond the point, that's a red herring for those disaffected Republicans who have been given a bad name by this Administration, as if Bush had anything to do with the party elite's strong arm tactics, hell McCain wanted Lieberman, and wasn't allowed to have him, they'll let he cut "pork" projects to republican and democratic constiuencies, but if he suggests touching that 400B+ per year military budget he'll end-up back in the hanoi hilton (I digress, my apologies) (more $$ for contrator income in that 400B than service member benefits for any fact-spinning liberal hating liars who 'll claim liberals want to cut funding to our troops, but will never mention the GI bill)
  • Palin is not the only right wing hypocrit caught in the act. Everyone out there has got to go to the "Huffington Post" site and see the "Daily Show" clips where Jon Stewart shows, Palin, Karl Rove, Bill O'Reilly and another Republican talking head directly contradicting themselves when talking about Sexism charges on Palin vs. Hillary, the experience of Tim Kaine Democratic Governor of VA., and Palin herself criticizing Hillary saying she was whining about sexism charges. These are directly contradicting hypocritical responses played one after another from Rove, Palin and O'Reilly that I hope end up in the media somewhere to expose their nasty hypocritical politics! You may be able to see it on ComedyCentral.com too. You've got to see it! Its one of those things that when you hear them viciously attacking one of their opponents and you say to yourself, "I wonder what they'd say if that were a Republican!" It's all right there on these back to back clips. It should absolutely discredit anything any of them say from now on!
  • I watched the video and all I can say is that if the Dems can get permission to replay it over and over again (like the ads that drive us crazy every four year), they'll have the election in the palm of their hands. I was astounded last night by the hypocrisy. If 9-11 never happened, Giulianni would have slithered out of office into the corporate world, never to be revered as he was last night. Sorry, but Giuluanni talking about moral family values when he flaunted (because he could get away with it) his adulterous relationship with his now-wife is beyond comprehension. And what happended to Mitt? What kind of pandering was that? I liked Mitt just like I used to like McCain because I felt they were genuine. Don't agree with them on several things but I could respect them. Boy, what a mess. What a horrible, ugly mess.
  • Good story. Reformer my behind. Executive decisions of this magnitude surely prepare a person for the Presidency.

And remember she still accepted the Federal money after she changed her mind about the bridge, she just spent it on other things.
  • This is what happened when McCain picked someone based on a telephone conversation... No one has mentioned the fact that one source was saying her husband was a member of a group that wanted Alaska to secede from the United States of America... very American don't you think? And with secession, guess what! We'll be importing oil from Alaska! Wow, now that would make them all rich!
  • Y'know, once you take the "L" for "lies" out of PALIN, you'll see what the Republicans will be left with: PAIN. A big one. Right in the you know where!
  • Palin was a lousy mayor who took a town with $0 debt in 1996 and left it $22 million in the hole in 2002, mostly from the hockey rink/sports complex she shoved down their throats which never became the money generator she promised it would. Another white elephant from another white elephant. Even with the stable Clinton economy during most of her mayoral tenure and Jack Abramoff's crony she hired to lobby Washington to help her now indicted buddy Ted Stevens ring up $27 million in federal pork for tiny Wasilla (pop. 5000 when she entered office) she still managed to leave the town swimming in debt.

She was so heavy handed the town's folk forced her to hire an administrator to handle day to day operations or face a recall.

As governor she is borrowing from Alaska's future while she wants to give away today's Alaskan windfall oil tax bonanza and the huge surpluses they've generated in bread and circuses tax giveaways. Alaska gets 89% of it's operating budget from taxing oil coming out of the ground just like Arab kingdoms and Hugo Chavez's Venezuela. They have no state income or sales tax up there. Instead of using that windfall to pay for all the profligate spending her Republican legislature keep sending her she's issuing bonds to pay for it all which Alaskans and US taxpayers will have to pay off in future years while she takes credit for tax "rebates" while she's governor.

Her fiscal policy is a disaster in the making which won't hit til she's left the governor's office. She'd be a disaster as Vice President especially to a President who despite his grevious wounds and type A personality is already past the age his father and grandfather died of sudden heart attacks.

She can put on all the lipstick she wants but her political record is for the dogs.
  • Sarah Palin: "What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick."

Whether it's in English, Czech, Japanese, Scottish ...... the name for a female pit bull with or with lipstick is bitch.

I cannot recall any of my ancestors or offspring that would take pride in that comparison. And Sarah Palin is not that stupid.

So much for faith, human decency, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Ba'Hai..values. The last thing the US needs is a self-proclaimed bitch for president.

We need a new direction: I have a beloved Mastiff with more human decency than Sarah Palin. This is not figurative, it is literally an invitation to surrender our country to the dogs.

Remember Jezebel, it was the dogs that licked up her blood.
  • Dov I expect that line was just an invitation for us to call her a bitch so Republicans can throw a hissy fit. I suggest you quote Bar Bush that oh so classy mother of our current president when she was speaking about Hillary and say you won't say it "but it starts with a "B" and rhymes with "witch".
  • Markkg8

Apologies for any miscommunication, But you have missed the point. Or did I simply overstate the obvious?

I'm not suggesting Democrats call her a a bitch, they don't need to reinforce her own rhetoric. . Obama and Biden are sufficiently gentlemenly.to avoid such nonsense and I hope you would rtrust them to do the same.

I grew up among fundamentalist Christians and Jews. Faith Based politics has taken a strange path that is to me incomprehensible other than that Lord Acton's quote that "Power Corrupts and Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely." needs no more exemplification.

As an American citizen or VP candidate Sarah Palin can proclaim anything she chooses, but to conflate Faith Based Family values, with the gutter language of the the cocaine dealers, and dog-fight enthusiasts.speaks of a Rovian philosophy that we can do without.
  • I have no doubt Obama and Biden won't call her a bitch either. But you can certainly expect "Lefty bloggers call her a bitch" posts from wingnuts to further solidify the base. Faux outrage is all they have and they're hoping we give them an opening to make it all look so ugly it turns indies off from voting at all. So if you're going to bring that word up then quote Bar Bush.
  • To quote both Strother Martin and Paul Newman's characters "What we've got here is...failure to communicate."

I will add Gertrude Stein's comment "A Rose, is a Rose, is a Rose"

My Father often told me I'd never win an argument with a woman-- he was right!

He also taught me to let those spoiling for an argument to have the last word.since it spoiled their sado-masochistic enjoyment.

or better Karl Marx (of all people is quoted), as "Last words are for fools who haven't said enough! " Nuff (and no more) sed
  • Even my pit bull was insulted by this obnoxious woman. Nasty, arrogant, trite, Borderline skanky.
  • Thank you for making this more visible. How do we communicate this more widely? Her 'introduction to the American people' is a pack of lies.
  • Any news about Obama and his terrorist friend Ayers? I hear he still has not shown a paper copy of his birth certificate. I can't wait for the Rev. Wright tapes to come out in October. We'll all get to see Obama agreeing (head nodding) with the Rev. Game, set, match.
  • That's what you hear, eh?

    http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in...

Any more lies... sorry, talking points you'd like to throw out there?
  • if Clinton was to be impeached for pseudo-cheating, then what about this?

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-10249...
  • You are all idiots. The "Earmark" was allocating CBDG (Community Block Development Grants) Grants for Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants. These are required for a Municipality to function, based on criteria set by the DNR. If you don't apply for the money, CBDG just goes somewhere else. 99% of all Municipal Projects are funded this way, unless the Municipality has a General Referendum for Project Bonding. Learn to read!
  • Except that she spent the money on a Youth Center, etc. etc. and then passed bonds to foist off the cost of the sewers and roads on future taxpayers.
  • Pork here, pork now, pork here, pork now!!!!!!
  • No no no...you guys got it all wrong..Wasilla was supposed to get an additional $1m more than they received...and she led the fight to get that amount reduced. and she succeeded! She did REALLY well.
  • lol
  • Bill Clinton called himself commander-inchief, yet hunderds if not thousands of GI's who he was commander of, have lost their benefits for less than what he did, why didn't he?

You call Palin a hypocrite, yet the Clinton's build a new house and since they have secret guards, the government build a house on their property for the agents to stay, the Clinton's charge, what their mortgage just happens to be!

Bidden is only worth 150k! I don't want a VP running my country who is too stupid to only be worth only 150K, Chelsey is worth more, OH wait, how did she get her job?

How is Obama gonna pay for the 150 Billion he promised to invest in 10 years?

Why do Democrats only want to hear people who agree with them? did any Republicans protest during the Democratic convention,no, so why is there demonstrations by democrats during the republican convention? what are you scared of?

Don Riccardo, McCain WAS tortured, don't believe it, ask the hundreds who were there?

Democrat morals? let me see, JFK and his brother tag teamed, Marlyn Monroe, What did Bill do? oh that's right, cant prove what "is" is,his religious advisor, Jessie Jackson, find out he has a child from a mistress, OH yeah, we cant say squat because his 'Rainbow Coalition" will threaten to boycott you, then there this other guy not too long ago, what's his name? the one standing by his wife with cancer?

Obama said he did NOT take money from corporations, yet, 50 million was raised for the parties HE attended, how ironic.
  • Who is Sarah Palin really really. The TPM Muckraker gives us a idea. This
may be a scary woman. The excerpts below are from that article. "Palin As Reformer? Not Quite..."
    http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/...
Here's a sampling of reports that complicate Palin's reformist credentials:
    • Last year, Palin requested more earmarks per person than any other state -- including some that were criticized by McCain himself.
    • Even as mayor of Wasilla, Palin's pursuit of earmarks was aggressive. She oversaw the hiring of a Washington lobbyist -- who, as we reported yesterday, had ties to Jack Abramoff -- to go after federal pork.
    • And though Palin touted her opposition to the "Bridge to Nowhere" just last week in her debut speech, she initially supported the project during her run for governor. It was only after the bridge became notorious as an example of pork barrel spending that she changed her position.
    • In her run for governor, Palin was endorsed by now-indicted Sen. Ted Stevens. Video of the endorsement has been removed from her government website, but the two appeared together just two months ago at a press conference on energy. The friendly relationship between the embattled senator, who is accused of lying about gifts he recieved from an oil contractor, and the supposedly maverick governor is at odds with Palin's claim to dismantling the "old boys club" of Alaska government.
    • As Wasilla mayor, Palin reportedly fired the police chief and attempted to fire the librarian, because she did not feel that she had their "full support in [her] efforts to govern the city of Wasilla." Former city officials allege that the attempts to remove the librarian were a result of her her refusal to censor books at Palin's request.
    • Palin has been at the center of the Trooper-Gate scandal that alleges misuse of her gubernatorial power. The affair erupted in July when Palin fired the Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. Monegan later claimed his firing was a result of his refusal to fire Palin's former brother-in-law and trooper Mike Wooten. Palin denied that she, her husband or her staff ever pressured Monegan, a statement she later had to retract when recorded phone calls revealed one of her aides, Frank Bailey, had called a troopers office pushing for Wooten's removal.
    • Tonight, the Washington Post published emails from Palin to Monegan in which she appeared to complain that Wooten was still employed, apparently undercutting her claim that she discussed Wooten with Monegan only in the context of the security of her family.
    • As a result of the Trooper-Gate allegations, an independent investigator has been appointed by the state legislature. In recent days, Palin has appeared to stonewall the probe. Her lawyer argued in a complaint filed last night that she wold not be made available for her deposition unless the probe were handed over to the state personnel board, whose members are appointed by the governor. Bailey, who had been suspended by Palin with pay for his actions, today backed out of his deposition.
    • In a separate civil suit related to Wooten, Palin has claimed executive privilege on over a thousand emails between her and her staff, including Bailey
  • Leave Granpa and Ms. Sarah alone! She has many accomplisments. She was State Chapter President of Alaska's Unplanned Parenthood Association. She is the beautiful mother of 4 or 5 wonderful children, and come December, or February will be the caring grandmother of 1 or 2 beautiful grandchildren. She is NOT Brownie in Drag. She is competent. And besides vetting takes time and effort. We need a leader like Granpa who can make snap decisions, and stick with those decisions until the ship sinks.
  • Sarah sure loves suckling at the public teat. Just call her America's favorite welfare mother.
  • Wow! Do you suppose there is a difference, fiscally and morally, between giving earmarks and receiving them? Are you folks so partisan that you can't think?

Obama gave a $1 million earmark to the hospital that more than doubled his wife's salary immediately after he was elected to the US Senate. He made no effort to eliminate earmarks. He just went along as he has always done.

Local residents pay taxes. DC pols, excepting McCain and a few others, buy votes buy doling out taxes as largesse. Do you really believe it would be admirable for a local official to feign self-righteousness by failing to seek those funds for the benefit her constituents. Like I said, Wow!

Are you folks hypocrites, or what?
  • I don't want to have coffee with Sarah Palin. Spilling coffee on her, well that's another story altogether.
  • I kind of feel bad how they keep passing around the baby.

I heard today during McCain's acceptance speech they plan on passing the baby around the convention floor to all the delegates.
  • Wow, am not surprised, no answers to my questions.
  • Sorry, but most of your questions were irrelevant, and anyway, I couldn't see that you are actually interested in answers. You're certainly not interested in solutions. Just answer me one thing: What about the last 8 years makes you want to repeat them for 4 more?
  • I don't understand why people don't get that if Obama was basing half of his campaign on how he NEVER accepted earmarks and how he's TOTALLY against pork-barrel spending (and bridges to nowhere!) and that these things are VERY BAD...and we found out he was hiring lobbyists and getting earmarks and supporting the bridges and running his town millions of dollars into debt...

Well, you know, we would be calling him out on it. As it is, these are McCain's problems, not Obama's. if McCain would like to recant on these things (FLIP FLOP) then fine. But as it is, calling liberals hypocrites because McCain is is perpetuating fraud kind of misses the point completely.
  • Actually, Obama has never based his campaign on not accepting earmarks. Everyone does, and it's a small part of the budget, miniscule in fact. But when you base your campaign on not accepting earmarks, you better make sure you're not the champion of earmarks before you do that. Palin has had earmarks of something like $35 per person while the rest of the US citizenry has gotten $2 per person from efforts of their lawmakers. She's the greatest! She'll stop at nothing to get elected, the truth be damned. My question is, why would anyone want to chance 4 more years like the last 8???
  • Obama will never get my vote!

    He

    1) was involved with a corrupt and convicted businessman and received tens of thousands from him for his political ambitions. (Tony Rezko)
    2) was involved with a terrorist whose home was where Obama started his political career. (William Ayers)
    3) was involved with a racist that hated whites and who also praised Hitler for wiping out the Jews. (Luis Farakhan)
    4) was involved with a pastor who was also his mentor that hates America. (Jeremiah Wright)
    5) was involved in a scheme with a bank that provided him a lower interest rate which saved him tens of thousands of dollars. (Northern Trust of Illinois)

He is for no drilling and refineries on our land. High taxes, bigger govt, weak on defense and terrorism. More entitlements to lazy Americans. No experience on foreign affairs.

He will always be known as Nobama after the election!
  • Every one of those comments are patently false. You can number them as if they mean something, but that doesn't make them any better than the lies they are. If you're going to criticize Obama, critize him for what he is, not for made up stull like this. More information regarding the truth can be found at obamapolitics.com
  • Wow a true republican ... a way to tie a man to people without him actually being involved in any of their actions... Let's talk about the McCain's and their actions... Not from another man but from his own doings..

    1) Please read about Keating 5 scandal, when McCain got a slap on the wrist for doing favors for a criminal.
    2) Next let 's look at the fact that his wife STOLE drugs for her drug addiction.. from her charity for KIDS!
    3) Let's look at the fact that Obama graduated in the top of his harvard class when McCain graduated 5th from the bottom of his Navy league school.
    4) Let's also take in account he admits to having several affairs on his first crippled wife (Mrs. McCain being
    the last of his scarlets).

Please do not throw stones when you're living in a glass house.
  • Shame on Palin for getting 11 million in earmarks for several public projects during her years as mayor. Good thing we can count on Obama for some real change, like a 12 million dollar earmark for road construction in a town of similar size! The *real* change we need!
  • Obama takes first hard hit at Palin

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Barack Obama took his first direct swipe at Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin on Saturday, criticizing her for supporting congressional earmarks before opposing them.

“I know the governor of Alaska has been, you know, saying she is change,” Obama said at a town hall meeting here. “And that is great. She is a skillful politician. But when you [have] been taking all these earmarks when it is convenient and then suddenly you are the champion anti-earmark person.

“That is not change, come on,” Obama continued. “I mean, words mean something. You can’t just make stuff up. You can’t just make stuff up. We have a choice to make and the choice is clear.”

The comments were his harshest attack yet on Palin, who sought millions of dollars in earmarks as mayor of Wasilla but later began criticizing them as governor. The Obama campaign has been searching for an effective line of attack against Palin since she burst onto the national scene a week ago as John McCain’s running mate.

Obama also took on McCain’s inner circle Saturday, saying the presence of former lobbyists at the highest tier of his campaign makes him incapable of meeting his pledge to shut down special interest influence.

“Suddenly, he’s the change agent,” Obama said of McCain. “He says, ‘I’m going to tell those lobbyists that their days in Washington are over.’ Who’s he going to tell? Is he going to tell his campaign chairman who’s one of the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington? Is he going to tell all the folks who are running his campaign who are the biggest corporate lobbyists in Washington?

“Who is it that he’s going to tell that change is coming?” Obama asked. “I mean, come on, they must think you’re stupid!”
  • Funny I do not see a signature on the comment. Also looks like two different hands wrote on this piece of paper. It is also not dated. So how do you actually attribute this to Sarah Palin?
  • The "SP" encircled near the top of the scribble is her signature stamp on all of these documents where she added comment.
  • There's nothing worse than being confronted by the facts.
  • I have asked this over and over now on all kinds of blogs, and no one seems to have an answer: What about the last 8 years would make anyone want to have the slightest chance of repeating them for 4 more? Is it our loss of jobs to China and the consequent impoverishment of more and more middle class folks? Is it the lovely wars with over 4,000 deaths of Americans and countless deaths of Iraqis, not to mention all the mamings and PST of our precious soldiers? Oh and lets not forget 9/11.... Is it the way this administration handled Katrina? Now there is a profile in competence... What IS it? PLEASE!!!! I'm really dying to know, since I just seem to be cluless.
  • Sorry, I meant PTSD.... (post traumatic stress disorder), not PST.
  • McCain on record criticizing Palin's earmarks.... PRICELESS
