Jimmy Carter won the Presidency over incumbent Jerry Ford in the election of 1976. The 1972 election was between incumbent President Richard Nixon and Sen. George McGovern. In a sense the latter was the first "post-Watergate" election, as news of the burglary actually broke before the election but was not widely covered in the press and largely ignored by the public.
