The Washington Independent: NY-23: Watertown Mayor: ‘It’s Over’

  • Pete · 1 month ago
Funny that the GOP talks about "overreach". Tell me again, friend-o, what exactly happens when you cut taxes for the richest Americans while starting two wars with money borrowed from China? Do deficits a) go down or b) go up? GOP is the very definition of "overreach". They tell their braindead followers that government can provide literally no services or support to its people and even actively encourage businesses to leave the country, yet launch war after war after war. If Bush hadn't chosen to invade Iraq, the economy wouldn't have collapsed (and we might have actually won the war in Afghanistan).

Support of labor has been part of the winning coalition in NY-23 for over 20 years. That was true of john McHugh. As long as Dede was in the race labor support was equally diviided. When she left the race labor support and the GOTV machine swung to Owens. It was this more than her endorsement, that will account for the result if Owen indeed does win. Also, I think there was a backlash against outside money and outside big guns that created the phenomenon. We are an independent lot and didn't appreciate it. Dede is within the mainstream of the NYS Republican party--no matter what others say. In a two person race she would have won going away.--it is too bad she got trashed. Finally, character accounts. When Doug HOffman went back on his word and ran as a conservative after telling Dede he would back her--nothing good could come out of it.

Well. American Taliban Doug Hoffman lost the election. I guess there just aren't enough American Taliban voters in the 23rd Congressional District to put a candidate over the top in a general election.
  • obama1termer · 1 month ago
Even if Hoffman doesn't win, it shows that it is time for the GOP to listen to America and stop trying to be Democrat-lite. If the GOP wants to win in 2010, they need to go conservative, period. The dems will do the rest and continue over-reaching as they have been since they fabled "I won" comment from their leader. The dems will be their own worst enemy over the coming months, trying to shove bad legislation down our throats, and it will backfire on them. Good.

You mean it's time to replace moderate GOPers with democrats? I think Pelosi would agree with you there.
  • ah64mtp · 1 month ago
There is nothing "moderate" about a RINO who endorses her opponent after she can't win. Either Owens or Scuzzefava would have been a reliable vote for Pelosi and thereby part of the problem. If there was a Republican primary, and $900,000 was not wasted on a RINO-reliable vote for Pelosi, conservatives would have probably won. In the long run, conservatives will win elections and liberals will lose. Yea, it's a Democratic Seat, and they can smile and think happy thoughts, but over-all Democrats, especially those in districts won by Bush and McCain, are an endangered species and their votes on Healthcare and Crap and Tax will be CLOSELY watched. Milk-toast Republicans (moderates) will also be watched.

    LOLOL

Thanks Rush!! Nothing like insulting the Republicans right before the election so they stayed at home.

Redstate called this election "a hill to die on".
Hilarious....not only for the melodrama....but the for the fact that the Repugs handlily shot themselves in the fact on this one.

    CLASSIC!!

I was not insulted by Rush. I was insulted that DeDe the RINO passed as a Republican with Republican Values and when she get opposition and can't win she endorses the Democrat. Irony? Either DeDe or Owens would have been a reliable Pelosi vote. She was no moderate, not even close. I know who the problem children are in the Congress and there is no RINO stealth action going on here. If Pelosi makes a quick stop, Owens might bust his lip on her ass when trying to vote. NY-23, you get what you vote for...Enjoy the crap sandwich.

This is a seat the Republicans had not managed to lose for over a century!

What erks me is that everybody blames the GOP for our nations financial problems. When they forget it was Clinton Era Econmic Politics that started this China Business Boom.Clinton signed business deals with China in the later 1990's... Also Clinton & Gore pushing the NAFTA on us. Which helped these Nations but, not us! Do you think the American consumers aren't noticing the multilingual labels & directions on items we buy at the store. You can't even by American fruit. Allot of it is shipped in from other places. No wonder the prices of healthy food is so high.
We once had all the manufacturing in our own country like; HealthTex and
New York Lace and Dexter shoes and Revere Ware and Tupperware and RCA, (just to name a few). When Clinton implemented these policies manufactures jumped ship to cheap labor and NO evironmental contols of Factories in these poorer nations.A fast Buck but NO future for American grandchildren. They have caused us to be a Nation of Consumers. The masses are distracted away from the reality of it all by the entertainment industry in the USA telling them get an IPhone and BlueRay TVs and laptops all with the ability to dowload movies and internet sites. (Eye Candy but no calories for the brain.) Hey, President Bush sent Colin Powell to India & China to see if we could break these trading treaties. He came back with Bad News; Iron Clad Contracts that could not be broken.Soon after he retired from public service. You know not all Americans are gullible, it's just our voices are squelched out by louder bullies with big bucks and clout! So don't blame the GOP, blame the good "ole boys who backed the Democrats who sold our nation down the river of no return. For the old mighty buck.
*I have a question? Is there even any Gold at Fort Knox anymore?
Because India just bought 200 pounds of it to back there currency.China is going to buy some too. We don't have any money to buy any since we are in debt as a nation.
  • strangely_enough · 1 month ago
Awesome revisionist history. Yeah, Clinton, not the GOP congress and Blue Dogs, did all that. By himself. While being investigated by the most hostile congress in memory every day of his presidency.
And, news flash. Secretaries of State don't unilaterally break contracts. That's not their job.

It truly takes a special kind of jerk to believe that the same party that has turned Albany into a clogged toilet has any right tossing this turd in our punchbowl.

Congratulations to our new congressman Bill Owens, the first Democrat to be elected to the House of Representatives in the last 150 years.

I've lived in this district for more than 50 years and given that experience I believe this would not have happened if Doug Hoffman did not enter this race. Dede Scozzafava would have won going away because this district is by and large really moderate.

I am proud of my neighbors in the whole district that rejected outsiders coming into our district - not physically, but over the right wing talk radio airwaves. Glen Beck, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh's constant barrage
and their tactics did not work in 2008, it did not work in 2009 and I pray that it won't work in the future.

    Obama1termer,
    We applaud your stupidity.
We worship at the feet of your stupidity.
A very conservative Republican challenges a moderate Republican who would likely have won easily and gives the Dems a seat that had not win since the time of Lincoln.
Brilliant strategy! Brilliant analysis. Keep it up

Regardless of the final outcome; Doug Hoffman made and will continue to influence how people want positive change and accountability from elected officials. Good Job Doug!

    Congratulations Bill Owens!

The "little guy" has finally awoken from his deep sleep to realize that feeding the children who are already here is just as important as saving the unborn. He now understands that working himself to death for low wages that don't even buy enough groceries to take care of his family doesn't cut it. He knows that the "big guy" only cares about buying the biggest house on the block and that he can lay us off on a whim because his bottom line isn't big enough to buy his third sports car. The poor now realize that the pursuit of happiness doesn't happen for them unless the Democrats are at the reigns.

Congratulations Northern New York. You have finally grown up.

To the church who stood all of the children by the road with Hoffman signs: Jesus loves the little children, even the ones who are already here. Jesus said, "love thy neighbor". That includes living children. Yes, I am a Christian.

To Jeff Graham: Shame on you for not caring. Take a look around. Layoffs and low paying service jobs. What do you think most of us are thinking? The minority doesn't win, the majority wins. We are the majority. I'm glad I live in a democracy. Hint for the future, when times are tough economically, back the Democrat.

To my fellow Democrats: Thanks for getting out to vote. We did it! Republicans, thank you if you stayed home. In reality, Ms. Scozzafava might have made a good candidate. Too bad Hoffman showed up.

I back to brag. Like I said New Yorkers do not like to be told what to do--whether they are conservative, liberal, or moderate. Go Owen another house seat for Pres. Obama.

Also, NJ and VA was governor races I know Faux News makes a big deal but they really don't count that much to me WHY as a life long NYorker we tend to have the republican on the lower level and Democrats in the House, Senate, and Presidency. Remember we had Guiliani and Bloomberg that is all they are good for Local Issues.
