Charles Johnson has never claimed to be "right-wing" and clearly has great fear he might be seen as so (the fringe elements in his comments section might have something to do with this fear).

Its sad to see the counter-Jihad/Islamist activists doing this to each other. Alas Charles has no experience with the situation on the ground in Europe and still views these things from an idealistic purist view of how the scourge has to be fought.

This was truly a fascinating peek into the world of blogging, but I still don't care. However, it might be helpful to point out that the Glenn Beck-related video was a smear, and one that Johnson pushed. When it was pointed out to him that the "burn" part of it was obviously from a plant, he simply directed people to the other, presumably non-plant parts of the video. That's the Weigel-level of reporting.

Dominionism, Dominion Theology, Christian Reconstructionism, Theocratic Dominionism, and Theonomy are not denominations or faith groups. Rather, they are interrelated beliefs which are followed by members of a wide range of Christian denominations. Generally speaking:

Dominionism & Dominion Theology are derived from Genesis 1:26 of the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament):

Theonomy (Greek for "God's Law") includes the concept that "God’s revealed standing laws are a reflection of His immutable moral character and, as such, are absolute in the sense of being nonarbitrary, objective, universal, and established in advance of particular circumstances (thus applicable to general types of moral situations)." 6,7 Thus, each of the 613 laws given to Moses and recorded in the Pentateuch (the first 5 books of the Hebrew Scriptures) are binding on people of all nations, cultures, and religions forever, except for those laws which have been specifically rescinded or modified by further revelation.
Christian Reconstructionism arose out of conservative Presbyterianism in the early 1970's. Followers believe "that every area dominated by sin must be 'reconstructed' in terms of the Bible." 1
The term Reconstructionism has been used to refer to various combinations of the preceding three terms. This type of confusion is common in the field of religion. Many theological terms such as Christian, Fundamentalist, Occult, New Age, Reconstructionism, Unitarian etc. have been assigned so many different interpretations by different groups in different eras that they are almost meaningless.

Its most common form, Dominionism, represents one of the most extreme forms of Fundamentalist Christianity thought. Its followers, called Dominionists, are attempting to peacefully convert the laws of United States so that they match those of the Hebrew Scriptures. They intend to achieve this by using the freedom of religion in the US to train a generation of children in private Christian religious schools. Later, their graduates will be charged with the responsibility of creating a new Bible-based political, religious and social order. One of the first tasks of this order will be to eliminate religious choice and freedom. Their eventual goal is to achieve the "Kingdom of God" in which much of the world is converted to Christianity. They feel that the power of God's word will bring about this conversion. No armed force or insurrection will be needed; in fact, they believe that there will be little opposition to their plan. People will willingly accept it. All that needs to be done is to properly explain it to them.

The fractures between LGF and some of the LGF-inspired right-wing websites began long before 2007 - I recall it happening during the Schiavo affair, during which LGF de-linked one of its best-known spinoffs which took a pro-Terri (i.e. in favour of keeping her alive) stance. LGF is basically a liberal/libertarian blog and I believe that Johnson regarded the "war on terror" as a liberal project even if it was run by conservatives. Most of the other blogs are run by religious conservatives who regard Islam as a threat to the "Christian west"; Johnson regards Christian fundamentalism as a threat to his way of life. The only thing that ever united them was hostility to Islam. As soon as the "war on terror" started to wind down and Bush was out of office, the alliance was bound to break down, much as the Muslim alliance with various Marxists in the UK broke down when the campaign to stop the war failed.

Obama didn't create the financial meltdown that started a year before election night. He's spending money [like Bush] because the republican de-regulation circle jerk allowed unregulated financial industries to destroy the economy.

There's a HUGE difference between Obama's massive spending and Bush's Massive spending. We need to spend money now.. Bush created the need to spend money.

A trillion dollar war based on cherry-picked faulty intelligence.. with BILLIONS missing to graft and corruption. A massive expansion of Government in the physical sense and in it's intrusiveness. That's Bush.. not Obama.

Obama's money is going to go into US infrastructure and the jobs needed to create that infrastructure. Where did Bush's Trillions go? He ran up a 4 TRILLION dollar debt over his 8 years. TRILLIONS of dollars of wealth just evaporated when our deregulated economy imploded.

You know where Obama will lead us.. if he delivers on his promises?
- billions in decreased health care costs
- Millions if not billions in decreased government costs (directed 100 Million in cuts this week)
- Updated infrastructure which will make the US economy more competitive in the future
- increased Alternative Energy which will make the US less dependent on regimes which undermine our interests abroad.

I don' t know much about Geller and Spencer, but I have been an LGF poster for years. Charles seemed to go off the deepend a few months ago. He started banning people and deleting comments simply because he disagreed with him.

Recently, there was a debate about whether or not the Nazi's (National Socialist Workers Party) were in fact socialists and/or leftists when they came to power in Germany. Mr. Johnson advanced the opinion that Nazi's were not socialists and were actually right wingers. I guess there is an argument for his view point, but he wasn't able to make it. He just kept repeating that "Nazi's were not socialists" like a troll. He eventually started to ban people and delete comments which politely and respectfully disagreed with him.

It really is a shame. Alexa shows his traffic down 20 some percent over the last three months. I think his behavior is destroying his blog.

I read somewhere that a "Charles Johnson" is strange variety of a "Moby" whose behavior discredits his own website. Seems true to me.

It depends on how you define socialism. Thats the problem with these kind of 'debates'. If you do favor the writings of people like Goldberg, than I'm sorry to say that there is a reason why his arguments aren't generally taken seriously. He seems to have a problem understanding that socialism isn't a fixed doctrine, nor does it have a fixed way of doing things economically or politically... there are many variations of similar ideas - mainly to ensure that power and wealth are distributed more evenly . Its much more complex than anyone who argues that Nazis were socialists would like you to believe.

Dictatorships, for example, could never be recognized as socialist states as a dictator stands against everything basic socialist tenets stand for... unless you do the kind of polemics people like Goldberg are up to.

Social Security and Medicare are HUGELY popular programs in the US. Every wonder why even the most rabid righ-wing lunatics in Congress don't take any substantive action to shut down entitlement programs? Because they'd get voted out of office if they really went away. All the do is shout and whine and nip that the heels of the programs. Could you imagine what would have happened to the Republican party if they had privatized Social Security? You'd be lucky to get 20% of the vote.

As per a poll released last week, over 60% of Americans believe Socialism is a better economic form than pure capitalism.
I'm having trouble with numbers right now but the vast majority of Americans support social security.
Most people want universal health care in one form or another.

And Taxes? Really?
95% of Americans are getting a tax break.
Even someone making well over the $250,000 limit, say $300,000, will pay a whopping $1500 more per year. Because the tax increase will be [less than] 3% on income OVER $250,000 the total increase for a $300,000 household is actually 0.5% for the full income.
This is what's going to destroy the nation? A top tax rate that is less than that of the booming 1990's ?? The top tax rate will be 15% LESS than the tax rate during the first 3 years of the Reagan administration.

Charles Johnson did not 'pick a fight' with Geller, or Dymphna, etc. over anything. He merely warned about the participation of unsavory groups at the Brussels Conference. I was a reader of his 'blog, as well as Gates of Vienna and Geller's blog when this all started, and recall that it was THEY who attacked, attacked Charles for that mild warning. It's high comedy to read about Geller accusing him of 'smearing', when in fact that's exactly what she and Spencer (and Beck for that matter) have been doing to Charles recently.

It was as a result of their obstinate defense of some of these groups (Vlaams Belaang for example), and their childish smearing of Charles in the process, that I stopped reading their sites.

What is unhealthy, and that goes for both Europe and the US, is that voters don't get educated in the underlying political philosophies of the choices. It tends to boil down to 30-second sound bites, with no context provided to explain how the ideas of a particular political party will benefit society in 10 or 20 years.

Obama was a wonderful recruiter, and his backing from people with serious money won him a soild victory. He has rewarded the backers with appropriate positions around him, so that Wall Street has never had as direct access to the US president as now. People may like to see banking so solidly in charge of the country.

For my part, I think there's something inherently unsound about the current situation.

Killing 3000 people is a crime and so is starving to death over half a million children in Iraq so you can get exclusive access to oil, not to mention the war-crimes committed during that same war.

The people who killed 3000 people on 9-11 are no different than US officials who have killed millions of people since the 60s under the excuse of spreading "freedom" (by bombing and killing them).

The US government is one step-below Nazism. It is the only government that used nuclear bombs on innocent people (and proud of it!) and which continues to own the biggest means of committing mass-murder in the history of mankind.

Instead of investing billions in getting rid of Saddam, we should have invested those same billions in building new technology so we would not even have to bother about getting control of oil.

I always found that the Iraq war was stupid, and that the 'evidence' presented for it by the US government (I watched Colin Powell closely in the UN) was seriously unconvincing. I do have some serious issues with the US foreign policy. Probably Bush should have listened a bit more to the spokesmen of "Old Europe" instead of deriding them.

The problem is that CJ attacks people without justification. US libel laws protect him from legal action on that, but that doesn't change the fact that he's flat-out wrong. Any journalist with a reasonable skill in research should be able to figure that out in one hour flat. Googling for "Suggested corrections for Charles Johnson" will bring up a whopping list of refutations of his 'evidence'. CJ has failed to acknowledge even the most obvious of these.

Of course, it may be fun or feel self-righteous to whip up an atmosphere of hate against various imaginary 'fascist' or 'neo-Nazi' groups. Sorry, wrong answer. I *took* the classes. Fascism and Communism are closely related. They are both statist, centralist ideologies where the State is supposed to regulate and control everything. The main difference is that Fascism is nationalistic, while Communism is internationalistic, seeking to impose their stupid system on the rest of humanity.

Mussolini and Lenin probably knew each other in Switzerland before WWI, where they both were deeply engaged in the socialist movements there. Mussolini fought in WWI, and noticing that the soldiers would identify with their nations, not with some abstract ideal, he changed his ideas accordingly and renounced the internationalist ideas, retaining the fundamental socialist ideals in a nationalistic framework. Hitler, who was a much worse ideologist than Mussolini, was basically an opportunist. But still, Goebbels and others made it perfectly clear that they were heading _socialist_ movements, despising the Conservatives, market economy, gold-based money, America and banking.

After the defeat of Nazi Germany, Stalin made a point of smearing the Nazis, fascist etc. as right-wing (Mussolini also confusingly said that), despite the fact that those ideologies were very similar to Soviet Communism, a fact exposed in a famous exhibit in Moscow after the end of the Cold War.

Conservativism (rule of law, free markets, small state) is the diametrically opposite of fascism.

Charles Johnson is not aware of that. After a while smearing everyone in sight for being 'fascist', he actually picked up the classic by Paxton on the subject, and attemted to frame the Vlaams Belang to fit into the Paxton definition of fascism. Needless to say, that was a very poor fit.

It is not good style to smear non-fascists for being fascists. Actually, it's quite harmful.

In the context we are using it here, neo-fascist or neo-Nazi means someone who believes they are far superior than others, others are less worthy, and that they can use violence/force to impose their values on others and who do not see a problem a subjecting others for their own exclusive benefits.

If the Nazi thinkers were alive today, they may have embraced capitalism and used to industrialized quickly and to build their armies to teeth.

Right-wingers in the US are often accused to being neo-fascist because they tend to espouse the things I explained above. It has nothing to do with belong to right vs left.

But using the Nazi smear should be done with caution. If you call a non-Nazi 'Nazi', it's libel. Blood libel, in a sense, because you are trying to associate that person to some of the worst crimes committed in history. While it may make you feel morally superiour, it is quite unethical.

Nazism can't embrace Capitalism, make a fortune and go to war. Try reading up a bit on history (there I go again...) Nazism was not economically viable, and it financed its war expenses mainly through plunder of the Jews. In Capitalism, where private property is respected, Nazism would be broke in 6 months.

Of course, I can think of Capitalist countries who do build their armies to the teeth and go on interesting wars far from home. The Vietnam war (and its democracy-building project) wasn't exactly a success, nor has the Iraq war been (so far), nor has the interventions in the Balkans (except the US got a nice, nuge military base in Kosovo: Bondsteel).

I'm critical of the US government for these things. But I'm not interested in using the Nazi smear, even though it by your definition would be justified.

I quit reading LGF a while back. He became obsessed with beating down Creationists of all stripes on his site. I'm not a religious person, but it became apparent that Charles' biggest gripe seemed to be with anybody that didn't repudiate all forms of mysticism. It became tedious and really destroyed the tone and camaraderie on the site. It became increasingly divisive and a less enjoyable to visit. I used to read his site several times a day, but I can honestly say I haven't been back in nearly a year. I find it funny that he seems so take the same actions in "policing" as he decries in others. Oh well, kudos to Charles anyway. He brought to light a serious problem in the world in extremist ideologies. I hope he continues to prosper, it just won't be one of my watering holes anymore.

I stopped reading LGF when Charles Johnson started blogging almost exclusively (in my view at least) about Right Wing Extremism. Not that we don't need to watch out for extremism on both the right and the left, but the anti-Right Wing Extremism beat is already pretty heavily crowded. I can (and frequently do) go to any number of lefty blogs and get the same type of stuff.

If that's what Charles chooses to blog about, fine, it's his blog. But I used to read his blog because it was unique. It is not unique any more.

You can't even say there MIGHT be evidence that scientifically verifies a designer behind anything in the universe. it's total Naturalism or nothing for Johnson. Even those who would say they believe God created life but used evolution to do it often get attacked there for 'waffling' on Naturalism.

Johnson is out to save America from people who believe science might be able to demonstrate life isn't a huge cosmic accident.

That probably drove as many readers away as the attack on fellow bloggers on taking terrorism to seriously.

Johnson booted me from LGF for defending Pam Geller when he made his 'lunatic' smear--and, admittedly, suggesting his focus on Creationists, of all people, was a case of misplaced priorities given the presence of a socialist in the White House and Islamic extremism on the rebound, but as he points out: LGF is his site, and while on his site, he can do and write what he likes. The down side? If one reads LGF commenters nowadays, one sees an echo chamber, with little healthy debate or exchange of ideas--and absolutely no opposing viewpoint to any held by Johnson. An avid participant and commenter of the center-right blogosphere, I no longer read LGF--not that the man cares, but I don't care he doesn't care. As Bugs Bunny would say, Johnson took a left turn at Albuquerque somewhere along the line, and I don't think he's coming back.

I went to one of these "Tea Parties".... and I heard a lot of crazy talk, primarily against "the international banking conspiracy" and their bankrolling of the nation's "elite." It all struck me as dangerously close to Nazi ideology.

Right now the GOP is floundering.... and if the people themselves don't take responsibility for their party, I guarantee that there are extremist activists who are ready and waiting to fill the vacuum with their white nationalist agenda.

I did some study of the Fed and the banking system in general, and must say I'm appalled. There is a systematic dishonesty in the way the current system promotes inflation and rewards the institutions that create our money - the Fed, and the individual banks through 'Fractional Reserve Banking'.

Now, I think Fractional Reserve Banking is a decent concept, but misusing it to create inflation is dishonest. That moves power from ordinary working & saving people to the financial system.

But it's not something I go ballistic over. Bought some gold and mining stocks, waiting to see the dollar tumble. Then the banking elite will have some serious explaining to do.

The person described in the article above is a sissy and can't take criticism. I wrote on another website some snarky comments about how LGF had gotten lost in the creationsim argument and pondered in jest, "What exactly is a Vlaams Belang?" Simply because I think the name has a ridiculous sound to it.

I know exactly what VB is, as I have read all the posts. It was a joke and someone, who shall rename nameless, but looks and sounds a lot like the guy in the previous article, took shame and canceled my LGF account by the following morning. Sad.

Crick became enamoured of the idea of directed exogenesis, that we were specifically "seeded", by extraterrestrials. He hypothesized that if an advanced race wanted to generate more life in the universe, the most efficient way to do that would be to shoot off bits of RNA in the direction of stars most likely to allow those strands to find habitable planets upon which to replicate. There was no mention of 'spaceships', only that the problems associated with interstellar travel had to be overcome. I believe his personal favorite mechanism was that of spores in a protected environment (say, in the interior of a comet).

Did he say "This is the way it happened?" No. He said that it's a possibility, and given what he considered a low probability of abiogenesis on what was then believed to be the early earth at the time (and before the discovery of extremophiles) it was a possibility that he personally liked.

He didn't burn anyone at the stake for disagreeing with him. Nor to my knowledge claim that everyone who DIDN'T think the way he thought as wrong. Or evil. He just thought that abiogenesis was a neat idea, supported by evidence from things like the Miller-Urey experiment, but believed that the early earth was an unsuitable place for it to come from.

For all we know, he may be right. One way he said his hypothesis could be tested is that when we discover life on other planets they would share similar characteristics. I suspect when that day arrives, proponents of exogenesis theories will be avidly awaiting DNA sequencing to see if that's the case.

There is a body of evidence that suggests carbon-based life, based on RNA / DNA replicators, could potentially self-assemble given the correct combination of natural conditions without the need for a 'master planner'. It's not a guarantee, of course, there's no lab with abio'd critters slinking about in the sludge of some test tube yet, but there is a fundamental difference between saying "I think perhaps life could happen spontaneously, and here's some of the mechanisms that offer support to that possibility tested by multiple people with similar result" and "The all-powerful sky god mote it so, woe betide the nonbeliever".

First off, aliens may also be mauve or azure. Possibly even plaid.

Second, evolution is separate from abiogenesis. Please refer to the reading material.

Third, abiogenesis need not involve aliens, plaid or otherwise. Crick happened to like that idea, but its not necessary, and certainly not the most popular concept. Doesn't mean he's not right, he may well be, we just don't know.

Fourth, creationists don't "hold that life is so complex that its creation MAY be the result"... they say "It *HAS* to be the result of a god. There's no other way." If you leave open the option that something else happened, by definition you're not a creationist... you're a "something else"ist.

Fifth, science class is for science, religious classes are for religion. When creationism is subjected to scientific rigor and can hold it's own as a theory which can compete on its own merits against abiogenesis, exogenesis and other more exotic natural-force theories then by all means, include it. Does that mean teachers should be fired for believing that? No... but they shouldn't be foisting their personal beliefs on the class. There's a cirriculum, stick to it.

Fifth (addendum), by the way... there's perhaps one day's worth of class time devoted to abiogenesis and exogenesis, basically saying "this is being researched, who knows what'll turn up". It's not like it's being talked about at length day after day. Most biology classes before university involve identifying types of cells by organelle and cell wall, identify organs in dissected frogs and the like (which inevitably results in chasing the cute girls in class around with a disembowled frog impaled on a dissection tool... fun for the whole class!)

Personally, I'm waiting for a local church to give equal time to a proponent of abiogenesis to set up an apparatus in the pews and conjure up some amino acids in real time. Don't see a whole lot of that going on in churches across the land...

... well, with the exception of the Unitarians. They're pretty cool about that sort of thing.

As for this ridiculous claim of $35 an hour wages... no, no it wouldn't. Why wouldn't it? Because corporations are required to maximize profit for the company. Wages are a cost. There's plenty of companies out there that have the cashflow to double their entire workforce's wages, overnight. They won't ever do that, though. Why? Because they wouldn't get increases in productivity to match the cash outlay.

It's the most economically advantageous for corporations to pay workers as little as possible and work them as hard as they can get away with. That maximizes their profits. Anyone who DOESN'T work that way is viewed with suspicion and derision... Take a look at the crap heaped on CostCo for daring to pay their workers a living wage.

I've yet to see anyone pay $2000 to find out if they have a cold.

I HAVE met a person with private insurance who ended up paying $28,000 because he got bit by a fruit bat. Insane.

That said... look at Sweden. Universal health care, government run, longer life expectancy and lower infant mortality rate. Cheaper on a per capita basis. Much healthier lifestyle overall.

I unSubcribed LGF from RSS reader recently. BTW, I went to the Tea Party in Chicago. It was a family oriented event. Lots of families with kids and individuals just to show they are concerned over these deficits. I can only speak for myself when I say I heard about these tea parties via InstaPundit primarily. The MSM made a conscience decison to ignore the (700 or so) tea parties. These tea parties do not support the liberal media's agenda.

I am offended everytime I hear some Democratic hack call the tea parties Astroturf.

Do some research on the "Double Tenth Massacre", involving the Japanese occupation of Singapore and the Kempeitai's habitual use of what they called "water torture", what we call water boarding.

Specifically, 21 Kempeitai were charged with war crimes specifically involving the torture of 57 civilians during the occupation. 8 were hanged, 3 were sent away for life.

I was somewhat inaccurate though. It was joint allied high command that had them put to death, not the US specifically. I suppose in the last 8 years, with the shedding of pretty much all allies, that makes such things "quaint".

Truman decided to nuke Hiroshima and Nagasaki because a D-Day-like invasion of the mainland would have cost millions more deaths of Japanese civilians and would've effectively reduced the entire country to a smoldering wasteland for decades. I am one of the latest posters to be banned from Little Green Footballs. I removed him from my blogroll and will no longer link to or visit his site. About 2 years ago, he got on an anti-creationist tangent that pretty much consumed his daily life. I’m agnostic, so it didn’t bother me. But since then, the pre-9/11 mindset flooded every niche of his site.

He sees nazis behind every door, and probably hiding under his bed. And those are just the people who don’t agree with him 100%. The man’s paranoia level is skyhigh.

Economy...a largely capitalist society WORKS. Sure it has faults, but it mostly gets the job done (thats not arrogance. Its history, and even then I admit to plenty of faults. Conservatism is a tragic view of life. Try to fix a lot of those faults and you'll just make worse problems elsewhere.)

I'm the 42 year old son of an evangelical minister. Even he would argue that there is no proof, but rather that belief is based in faith.

I have a little theological question for you, based on 2nd Peter 3:8-10, the theologically accepted "A day is like a thousand years..." premise. If indeed, a thousand years is but a day to god, then how has his personality and dogma changed so much in the past seven days (christian timeline of creation>old testament(5k yrs)>new testament>present time(2k yrs)? How has god gone from having the temperment, rigidity and vengeful nature of the old testament to peacefully accepting what THE CHURCH has made of his worship, and the secular course of the planet in only seven days?

Actually, Johnson mystifies me. Charles himself admits that he has no competence in identifying photoshopped pictures. I think he's right this time. There are two obvious flaws in the image he posted:

1) The light is wrong. The two face in the foreground have light from the left, as on a vaguely sunny day, while the demonstration in the background has diffuse light as if overcast.

2) The context is wrong. The background mob would probably love to chase away the two persons in the foreground ('fascists') - and noone in their right minds would pose smilingly in front of an Antifa demonstration the way they do.

Due dilligence is not what Charles does best.

Ronald Reagan did NOT reduce the size of government; that was just a claim that was made because, well, he was going up against incoherent idiots like Mondale and Carter. In fact, Reagan dramatically INCREASED the size of government, probably unnecessarily, under the guise of defending against the USSR. The problem was that even the most conservative estimates had the Soviet Union crumbling by the mid-1990s; and, in fact, Gorbachev probably prolonged its existence with that good ol' "Nyet" doctrine.

Nor did Bill Clinton shrink the size of government. DOMA imposed a federal restriction on religions like the Unitarians and UCCs who wished to perform same-sex marriages. The Communications Decency Act actually increased speech regulations more than anything this side of the USA PATRIOT Act. He also introduced SCHIP and created AmeriCorps. So how exactly did that reduce the size of government?

Finally, you encourage people to read economics (I presume you mean "study") before voting. I couldn't agree more. Perhaps you should heed that advice yourself, though. Pure, unregulated capitalism is absolutely insane; that's what kept Chile in the dark ages for decades -- remember, Pinochet wanted "to make Chile not a nation of proletarians, but a nation of proprietors," based solely on a complete free-market economy. When you have that kind of economic anarchy, however, it becomes just as repressive as the government repression you seek to escape; when corporate conglomerates can take over every business in town, you lose the sense of variety that the truly competitive free market inherently needs to survive. The president who probably best understood this was, in fact, a Republican: Theodore Roosevelt. So perhaps, Mr. Free, you might want to take a look at both history and economics before declaring your unrelenting support for free-market anarchy -- unless, of course, you approve of living in a plutocracy.

Probably the best response to Chas and his 'fascist' witch-hunt is to ridicule fascism. Nazism too, now we're at it. Fascism was at least a somewhat consistent, if stupid, attempt to organize society in a novel way. Nazism was brutal opportunism taken to the max. But at least they had a better uniform designer than did the Italians. I think someone famous was behind the Nazi uniforms.

Someone mentioned Jonah Goldberg and his book "Liberal Fascism". While I think Goldberg takes some excessive stabs at Hollywood etc., his basic narrative is sound, and sets the whole origin of Italian fascism (in particular) in its relevant historical perspective, closely related to Soviet Communism.

Telling the world just how stupid fascism is, in all its variations, is a service to mankind.

Capitalism is not pretty, but it's better than all the alternatives. So regrettable as it may be to say a degree of oversight and regulation to keep very bad things from happening is a good idea. The best use of social programs and the like is to buffer society against the troubles that are caused when the likes of AIG, GM, or other firms go belly-up. Retraining and recasting our citizens to the new demands of the marketplace.

That's what I see as the maximal benefit of those social programs and support structures.

I used to follow LGF daily, and appreciated the anti-jihad (and anti-moonbat) work, but increasingly it was just getting uglier and uglier as it went along. I eventually couldn't take anymore and stopped reading.

But this past week I decided to check it out again, and wow, the thought that came to mind was "what happened to Charles Johnson?" So I Googled that phrase, and ended up at this page. That's some dark and ugly stuff going on at LGF. I also noticed a few other items:

* He used to display the site access stats. Not anymore. Maybe because readership is way, way down?

* Lots more advertising, and it's more generic stuff (as opposed to ads that advertisers pay for to get onto your site in particular). This too seems to indicate that the popularity of LGF is way off what it used to be.

Charles Johnson's ideological switch is related to the gay marriage debate, and Johnson's own sexual identity.

Charles is not openly gay. However, he if he was, things would be a lot clearer for the people who are scratching their heads as to why he 'flipped'.

Johnson's later-day attacks on 'creationists' etc, is his attack-by-proxy against the religious forces he views as denying gay rights. His sudden interest in Christians and creationism, time wise, aligns with the rise of the gay-marriage debate on the national (& international) stage.

Johnson's original focus upon radical Islam was sparked by similar concerns (for him personally) about Islamism's threat to liberal democratic values (which of course, include gay rights).

When you approach Johnson's changing views from this vantage point, there is consistency in his motivation.
