When I first saw Obama, I thought hey, a young, fresh candidate. then I saw Rev. Wright and said absolutely no way will this man get elected after belonging to his church for 20 years. Boy, was I ever wrong.
Half of our country obviously didn't vote smart this time - they voted against a Republican and also based on a historical making even - electing a black man as president. Maybe next time they will do a little more research and listen to what's out there and vote for someone qualified and surrounds themselves with fine, upstanding Americans, not the corrupt friends that Obama has.
That would be more than half, and it will be more than half again in 2012. Just because you scream the loudest doesn't mean people agree with you.

This addresses where it says all doctors get the same pay for performing procedures regardless of if they are a specialist or not. Now the thing is if you are a specialist you'll be doing procedures that a regular doctor can't do and therefore will be paid more for those procedures, much like the system is now. This sets it so a specialist performing a more general procedure can't charge you a premium because he's a specialist. It's like being charged more for a burger at McD's just because a Master Chief made it instead of the regular guy.
Maybe we should revert back to the time of the Cabinet Secretaries being responsible for their respective areas of responsibility. If these CZARs do not come under a Cabinet Secretary, then maybe this is not an area of responsibility as required by the CONSTITUTION,

I am old enough to remember Senator Joseph McCarthy, another paranoid, who set himself up as judge and jury of his bettors. He got away with it until enough decent people said "enough" and censured him.
I read Beck's bio on Wikipedia and wasn't surprised to find that he has a failed life: alchoholism, drug addiction, failed marriages and failures in school. He also manifests that "nice guy" personality that alchoholics use to sink ever lower while destroying those around them. His life reads like that of a poster boy for extremist recruits as described by Eric Hoffer in his classic on fanatics "The True Believe".
I hope some one cares enough to help him get well instead of merely profiting from his paranoia.
Three days ago, a family of 7 deer were grazing in my back yard, and they are threatening to sue because my husband and I watched them in secret behind the bedroom blinds. You're right that many people choose not to buy insurance. I was self-employed for many years and lucky that I didn't get sick because I had no insurance. But to "choose" to buy it would have meant to "choose" to not buy something else... like food, housing, etc. That's why we need to have a public plan... because those people who choose to not buy into the system still use it when they get sick and what happens when they can't pay their bills? YOU pay them. Me too.
If you look at the Preamble to the US Constitution it declares the purpose of the government. ... provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare. Everyone benefits from a populace of healthy people.

If you think that your produce is reasonably priced, then you are also in the dark. Maybe saying "do you really think that unequal or even inadequate access to healthcare and education creates the kind of lives for our fellow citizens that we want them to have? Does such inequality or inadequacy create the kind of citizens we want? Would we not all benefit as a country if we had healthier and smarter fellow citizens?" Just a thought.
I'm all for reform of healthcare or education provision that allows for better, fairer, easier access for every CITIZEN that does not put the entirety of the burden to pay for such measures on any party (government or business community or social class) that might be detrimentally effected or unfairly targeted in the assignment of funding responsibility (through the amassing of further public debt, forcing them to pay for the benefits, their shouldering of the tax load, etc). Citizens that benefit from such reform should also expect that it will require them to do their part in acquiring the healthcare coverage and/or education - shoulder some of the costs, government service work, "payment in kind" programs, etc.

Here's a few things we could do to reform HC because we do indeed need healthcare reform...just not a new system. Tort Reform, allowing small businesses and individuals pool to get better rates, portability of plans between jobs, being able to contract across state lines...
They tried that in Missouri and the cost of health insurance went up by a factor of 2.
What do your reform ideas do for the millions of uninsured?
As for the uninsured, I have no problem creating tax incentives to offset the costs and do a number of other things (like portability and grouping) to address some of the other cost issues. What we can't do - in this economy for sure - is afford a Gov't Option - NOR IS IT CONSTITUTIONAL. The fact is the Gov't can't be responsible for everything and it isn't supposed to either.

I have not had to go to the welfare office; YET.
But I have a friend who is divorced after 20 years of marriage with 8 children(all through the marriage) and when he lost his job last year( the plant went under) they lost EVERYTHING.
Well, since their divorce she went to get assistance with food.
The office lost her paperwork twice, denied her 3 times, and actually threw away her paperwork once.
They denied her any assistance and since she is a single mom with 8 children and an ex who has been out of work for a year. I can only assume that her denial was based on the color of her skin (or lack there of).
Since this incident this same office has been cleaned out by the government
and the employees replaced for lack of them doing their jobs.....
THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING......

There was a ready made audience of those waiting to be lead, waiting for this exact type of hate that has been brewing on the far right. It's authoritarian style, such as the Bush administration, is embraced and the loss of rights is seen as a trade off for imaginary security.
These new far right Republicans, having set aside their principles and morals, will say or do anything to regain control. And with the amount of money and resources at their disposal I would look for more Glenn Becks on the horizon.

Van Jones and all the Czar's currently do not have to fill out the 7 page form with 63 questions that is required for all Cabinet Secretaries. This is ridiculous and resulted in a VAN JONES, with all his smelly baggage, to be Advisor to the President. Obama is thumbing his nose at our Constitution and should be stopped. A bill is currently being written that would correct this travesty. We need to see that it is passed into law and that this President, and all future Presidents, would have to conform.

I don't believe that the Sunstein or the current administration believes that the gov't has default control over the human body. That position has already been taken by the pro-life conservatives.
The facts are that the number of Americans that wish to donate their organs after they die are greater than that listed on the organ donor rolls. Many of these people who do not object to donating their organs never donate their organs because they didn't let their family know their wishes or didn't take the time to sign up, or their card wasn't in their wallet when they died.
TuIt's the ultimate conservative selfishness------wanting to make sure you hold onto what's yours----even in the grave.
It is actually not ungenerous for conservatives to want to increase the odds that people's bodies will be treated with dignity after they die. The most elegant solution is the one that some else suggested, which is that maybe there could be more education on the subject. But we should default on the side of dignity and letting families choose otherwise if they wish.
Families should have little say in the matter. It is up to the individual as to what happens to the body after you die. If you don't want to donate, you say that you don't and then you don't have to. It's that clear.
May you be in need of an organ soon. I would bet your tune would change.
If the individual is dead, the family is the next best thing. If the individual didn't state his preference, it should be up to the family, not the state.
Like I say, educate people. If signing up to donate your organs makes sense, people will do it.
I don't know if this is a State thing, but even so, couldn't those in favor of a state requirement, petition their representatives to pass legislation to this end.
And while I am here... I have farm more concerning issues with CassSunstein.
The truth is that a person's surviving family actually controls the donation of organs. Even if one has signed a donor card, there will not be any organ donation unless the family agrees. There have been cases in which the donation did not take place despite a signed donor card because the deceased had never spoken about it to his family, and they had reservations. If you wish to have any of your organs available for donation upon your death, talk to your family about it! If you do not, talk to them about that too.
I remember hearing while I was on "The List" that in some countries, donation was the default assumption. I am not sure that is (was) true, but it seems easy enough to opt out if one wishes to do so.
Having lived for thirteen years with a donated liver, I feel very, very fortunate that some one and his/her family decided to donate. I think about that family often. I am not sure that I would want donation to be the default position, but as long as a person can opt out, I can see an argument for that scheme.

To be sure, given they had overtly political overtones like asking kids do things like listing their three favorite words from the speech and rank them I think any fair minded person would agree that focus grouping our kids isn't what the speech should be about.
The President should be able to tell kids to to do well in school (regardless of party) I just say to keep the politics out of it.
Perhaps should you read more with greater understanding. You might absolve yourselves of being ignorant. You may even come around to understanding the government is not always your friend. Your side had total control of the reigns of power for 4 years(2002-2006), and pushed hard to the right. And with the help of corporate democrats, liberals haven't had much of a say since 1994. I know that sounds harsh, and greed has affected both sides of the aisle. But let's create jobs so everyone can achieve the American dream. Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime. Right?
1. I came to this country as a child, escaping a Communist system from a country that is often applauded by liberals for having a great healthcare system, but from personal direct experience I know that it is one of the worst in the world. That country is Cuba. Even as a child I saw injustices and evil in that country, while I noticed adults around me living in fear.
2. I went to public schools all my life. My parents wished they could send me to parrochial schools since they objected to a lot of things being taught in the public schools. They made up for it by schooling me at home everyday after school and on weekends. I was a straight A student all the way. I faltered a bit in the beginning as I learned to speak and understand English. After that, I was tutoring many of the same kids that made fun of my accent when I first entered school in the U.S.
3. My parents saved money like crazy so that I could afford college. Anyway, I got a scholarship. I continued with good grades, while I worked at the same time.
4. Businesses and corporations in this country pay one of the highest taxes in the world. People in my family who are small business owners know this first hand. I worked for my uncle's company for 2 years after college, helping him with bookkeeping. The taxes were incredible then and are even worse now.
5. I got into med school and now practice as a physician, as I pay back collosal debt from medical school (harder to get scholarship for med school than for college but I was very happy that there are companies that lend at low interest rates). I will never default on a loan. To me, that is the most dishonorable thing. I would sooner live in a shed and eat only noodles and beans before defaulting on a loan.
That's the difference between a proud conservative and a whiny liberal.
What you should note is that instead of refuting or even answering the questions many attack the messenger instead. And to just frame Beck by the reference to the Rockefeller Building is to miss the point entirely. This is much larger than that and you know it.
Seems to me, if Beck is wrong on EVERYTHING then he should be easy to do away with. Conversely, the more that people (like yourself) dismiss him and everyone that thinks similarly the more popular he gets thereby bringing his legitimate questions to the forefront.

Terrible, terrible thing that a President should try to prevent a financial meltdown or extend health care. Remember, the Institute of Medicine, part of the National Academy of Science, says that there are 18,000 unnecessary deaths in America per year (that's six times the number of people who died in 9/11) because of lack of access to medical care. Where are all those pro-life types on this issue?
How does one "prevent a financial meltdown" (particularly one that has already occurred!) by spending us into disastrous, unmanageable national debt? A financial crisis brought about by public policy that demanded banks make loans that by any reasonable assessment could never be paid back because it was desired that home ownership be increased from 60% to 70%. Do you want to "extend health care," why not demand tort reform so doctors are not forced into defensive postures (and unnecessary testing and procedures) to keep from being sued by ambulance chasers like John Edwards? Why don't we have grocery insurance? It makes as much sense as insuring routine medical office visits. What we need is Medical Savings Accounts combined with Catastrophic Insurance. Reintroduce price pressure into medical services, and stop having every half-wit pressure group demand that their pet malady be mandated to be insured by medical insurance. The free market could go a long way toward lowering costs and making coverage affordable to more people. Much of the inflated costs of medical services are due to hospitals recouping their losses from the free treatment they are mandated to give to illegal immigrants and other layabouts!
I suggest that you read the chapter on the Great Depression from "A Monetary History of the U.S" by Milton Friedman and Rose Schwartz, two conservative economists. (Friedman is also a Nobel Prize winner.) The chapter is called "The Great Contraction." Friedman says that the Great Depression resulted in principal part from the failure of the Fed to act boldly to bolster the banking system. Consequently, there was a rapid and fatal contraction of the money supply. Had the government not acted last year to shore up major financial institutions there would have been an even larger contraction of the credit markets and disorder in financial markets that would have been catastrophic.
Banks certainly made some very bad loans. If it was government policy, it was not Obama's policy, since it preceded him. Furthermore, you ignore that banks made a great deal of money making these loans, bundling them and selling the resulting securities to investors. Were it not for this, they would have found a way to avoid making the loans. The investors included many pension funds, perhaps even yours. If so, pray that AIG makes good on its insurance.
As far as stimulus goes (although I did not mention that), even conservatives will admit that WWII ended the Great Depression. This was the largest stimulus package seen up to that time (with, perhaps, the exception of the Civil War). What happens in a war? The government hires all able-bodies males (and some women) that it can, spends like crazy and goes into debt. It is the classic dig holes and fill them up kind of project: the only difference is that in this case it is build things to blow up other things so that they can be rebuilt after the war. Seemed to solve that pesky depression problem. I would, however, like to see some more useful activities included in the stimulus than war.
You are right that we need some competition in the health care system: that is why so many favor a public option to create competition for a highly concentrated insurance industry, although there may be other ways to lower prices like the Swiss system. It is not true that a public option always drives out private alternatives. The British have private insurance providers, and Britain is the poster child for public insurance.
I am unsure how much competition we can introduce with just free-market alternatives because the person who profits from medical procedures (the doctors) also generally decide what procedures their patients will have (compounded by the problem that the doctor also probably owns an interest in the lab, X-Ray facility, MRI machine, etc.). We probably do need to reform our tort system, but still provide some reimbursement for people who are harmed by negligent treatment.
We already have Medical Savings accounts, although it might be good to expand them to be multi-year. Losing what one doesn't use at the end of the year is probably not the way to go. However, these will probably not help persons in minimum wage jobs, who are the people without insurance.
As far as your "illegal immigrants and other layabouts," they are not the bulk of the uninsured. According a recent story in The New York Times, illegal immigrants are about six million of the forty eight million uninsured - about one eighth. "Layabouts," as you call them, who do not work and have never worked have insurance - Medicaid. The uninsured are those in service jobs with no benefits or the recently unemployed with too many assets to qualify for Medicaid.
Actually, we do have grocery insurance. It's called Food Stamps.

There is virtually no hope now for any of the appointees. They can see that no one is going to stand behind them and fight or them now. Mr. Jones statements are not something that just came up. They have been out there in the public arena for quite a while. Did the administration not know of them? If so, then they are worse than I have imagined.
With the supposed huge questionnaire that all appointees had to complete, the vetting process sure has sucked. One would think that they could get some of these things right.
I must go back to their gutless ways. How many of their appointees are being held up even to this day. I know there are many but the one that really pisses me off is the Dawn Johnson appointment in the Justice Department. Despite the fact that the weasly Harry Reid has not forced this appointment thru, why hasn't the White House publicly done something to get this through. It has been more than six months since the inauguration.

Personally I wrote to my Senators when the Social Security Prescription Plan was pushed through under the Bush Administration and also resigned my membership to AARP when they announced their endorsement to that plan. Our Senators and Representatives, period, no single party, have allowed themselves to come under the influence of Spending Highs and we need to convince them to kick the habit or move on!

Your assertions that the right wing is responsbile for Jones' demise if FALSE. First of all, a large percentage of those in opposition just happen to be both democrats and independents. I know because this fact applies to ME!
Secondly, Jones is a grown-up now and is 100% responsible for himself. Instead of blaming others for consequences that befell him due to his own actions, perhaps Jones should have thought about possible consequences BEFORE he irresponsibly acted. Don't you agree that it would have been reasonable, grown-up and responsible for Jones to assess possible consequences before undertaking many of the things that HE, himself, personally chose to do? Or - alternatively: are you saying that Jones is excused from acting irresponsibly because someone else forced him to do the things that HE did? If so, then Jones lacks free will AND lacks control over himself. In all cases, the result is that Jones immediately disqualified himself from any and all job positions.

I know from years conducting my own independent research that Glenn Beck was 100% correct in the claims made against Jones. Glenn Beck - in spite of being honest and trustworthy - had a fundamental duty to expose these facts. Jones, however, did NOT have a "duty" to break the law as he did when he targeted Glenn Beck. Attempts to silence another's first amendment rights through the use of mundane and/or extreme, oppressive acts is a statutory violation that enables the victim to seek restitution in either the state or federal courts. Moreover, oppressive acts that obstruct the victim's future economic gain are often addressed in a final cause of action entitled "treble damages." Does this sound ominous to you? It should.
Sounds to me like Jones got off easy. Sounds to me like Jones is one lucky guy.
Jones - who previously admitted having a J.D. or law degree - would most assuredly know about all of these tiny, erstwhile details. I assume you're kidding or something about thinking the videos, statements, and speeches of Van Jones are forgeries. If not, then you've got mental problems.
Beck took Jones down fair and square. That's what really bugs you guys. What amazes me (actually it doesn't, it just disgusts me) is that Jones's obvious unfitness for being in any kind of public office doesn't phase you a bit.
The only reason Glenn Beck went after Van Jones is because he thinks Van Jones was the force behind his losing sponsors. If it weren't for that, Glennie could care less.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter much why Beck went after Jones. All that matters is 1) that he outed him as a communist kook, and 2) that liberals obviously don't give a damn about having a communist kook in a position of power.
And of course Beck's motivations are beside the point, unless your point is to mount a weaselly ad hominem attack, which...well, I guess that really is your point. Anyway, the fact is that Beck took Jones down purely on the evidence. Jones's statements were so self-evidently crazy that all Beck really had to do was air them. It's obvious the guy shouldn't be anywhere near a position of power in the government, especially an unaccountable position like czar.

Anybody who has the slightest experience in political science well knows that the Obama administration is centrist conservative. But of course if you're to the right of Henry Kissinger and Newt Gingrich, centrist conservatism must look quite radical.

The problem is not our healthcare...it is the best in the world. The problem is the cost of the healthcare which has been exponentially increased because of the Demoncrat-backing ambulance chasers. Yes, the lawyers are to blame.
They look for someone who is dumb enough to spill hot coffee in their lap (which surely requires medical attention...yeah, right) and convince that person to sue for the restaurant that served the coffee for $80 million. That forces doctors to carry malpractice insurance that keeps skyrocketing with every frivolous lawsuit filed.
You want to fix healthcare? Healthcare doesn't need fixing...healthCOST does. And the way to do that is to instill a "loser pays" system. You file a lawsuit and you win, the loser pays the damages and courts costs, but if you want to sue for $80 million for spilling coffee in you own lap and you happen to lose...guess what? You get the pleasure of paying McDonald's court costs.
This will cut down on every Tom, Dick and Harry trying to strike it rich with their implausible goldmine lawsuit.

It is dangerous for such a mentally ill person to be spreading the propaganda that Herr Goebbels spreads. The man is delusional; he is downright whacko. He is dangerous. He is directly responsible for people showing up at town hall meetings with pictures of Obama and Hitler side by side, as well as pictures of Obama with a Hitler mustache. Herr Goebbels is directly responsible for all of the nasty rhetoric that Obama is a Commie, he's a Nazi, he's a totalitarian leader. Beck (excuse me, Herr Goebbels) has been a big promoter of guns and militias; he has talked about "revolution." Beck is in part responsible for idiots such as that guy who showed up at an Obama event with an AK-15, an assault weapon.
There is no doubt that Beck is strongly contributing to the atmosphere of hate and vitriol in this country; there is no doubt Beck is contributing to the atmosphere in this country where one thinks it is ok to bring a loaded gun to an Obama event, even though that may be legal.
This is a tactic too often used by the liberal media. For example, I went to downtown Atlanta about 3 years ago to protest amnesty for illegal aliens. I made a great sign showing a picture of an Hispanic-looking man complete with sombrero being crossed out by a red circle with slash. Above and below the artwork read "NO TO ILLEGALS," but what did I see on the news that night? I knew exactly what I was going ot see because of how close the camerawoman got to the poster. The screenshot during the news cropped out the words and just had the artwork so as to make our crowd of protesters, and me, look like racists.
And I just love how liberals cannot debate without name-calling like "Herr Goebbels", "Fox & Idiots," and my personal favorite "Nazis." As soon as you start name-calling, I know that you are admitting defeat because you cannot debate the facts nor can you debate logic and reason.
There is a local radio talk show host here in Atlanta who is conservative and - gasp! - black, by the name of Herman Cain. He has a little acronym he has coined: SIN. He uses it to describe the debate methods used by liberals (uh-oh, I just called them liberals... is that name-calling?).
When a liberal finds him/herself backed into a corner in a debate they will ultimately commit S.I.N. :
S = Shift the focus of the debate by introducing subject matter that has nothing to do with the discussion at hand
I = Ignore the facts of the subject (e.g. "Bush lied, people died." For something to be a lie, the person who told it must know at the time he told it that it was false. But in the WMD case, our government acted on the gathered intel from Great Britain who also believed and knew Hussein had the WMDs.)
N = Name-calling, the finale tactic in the liberal playbook. When in doubt call your opponent a "racist" , "hatemonger" or a "Nazi." or in Van Jones' case an "a--hole." (But that's probably "raaaaaaaaaaacist" of me to point out something negative and hate-filled a black man said.)
The funny thing about the "Nazi" moniker that liberals just looooooooooooooove to sling about is that the Nazis were the the Socialists in Germany. They took over the means of production, they took control of the guns... not the conservatives.
Luckily conservatives haven't started called people Nazis or Fascists. If they were to start doing that, then I knew that they would be admitting defeat because they couldn't debate the facts nor could they debate logic and reason. The best part about the "Hitler" comparison that conservatives love to toss around is that Hitler was all in favor of blaming Germany's problems on the "others," demonizing them for political gain, and getting rid of them any way he could...sounds an awful lot like conservatives blaming "others" (Immigrants? Welfare queens? Gays? Atheists? Take your pick!) for all of America's problems to me. Hitler was also a big fan of pre-emptive war, but I guess it couldn't be helped; after all, I'm pretty sure that Poland had weapons of mass destruction and would've invaded Germany eventually.
I agree with you about your sign, though. The media took that entirely out of context and misrepresented your opinion. Everyone knows that all of the illegal immigrants that have ever come into this country have been Hispanic-looking, and every last one of them wore a sombrero. 1. I did know that the guy who showed up with an assault weapon was a black man. What does that have to do with anything? I said nothing about his race. The fact is, some crazy person showed up with a loaded assault weapon. That is dangerous, even if it is legal.
2. Beck calls names all the time. He called Obama a "racist," with a "deep seated hatred of white people." This is in spite of the fact that Obama's mother and his beloved grandmother were white. 4. The German name for the Nazis does have the German word for "socialist" in it. However, the Nazis were not socialists. They were in fact capitalists, for German companies. They had a laissez-faire attitude towards German companies. It was the foreign, international companies they wanted control over, not their own. Further, Nazis hated Communists, so I'm confused when Beck and his followers have called Obama's administration "Nazis," yet he also has called them "Communists."
5. I said absolutely nothing about Van Jones being a communist, 9-11 truther. Yes, Van Jones has said some inflammatory things in his past.
6. Beck has shifted the topic of discussion often. What in the world was his nonsense last week about the NBC building having "communist" symbols in its artwork? That was done some 70 years ago. What in the world does that have anything whatsoever to do with today's issues?
Also, it should be pointed out that beck (Goebbels) has company in that media Reich. If you want to have a private room during hospital stays, or want skin treatments, or plastic surgery, or non-injury related chiropractic care, there is private insurance for that. In many countries in Europe, Switzerland being the best example, there are no laws against the existence of private insurance companies, but the insurance companies must be not-for-profit if they want to be in the basic comprehensive health insurance game. There's more to it than that. As Obama pointed out in his most recent town hall, there also is the issue of cost of capital. Where private companies have to earn it or borrow it at interest, the government would just take it out of the general fund. The government could also set rates of compensation through force of law rather than negotiated agreement. The government would have huge advantages, which is precisely why the left likes the idea: it would place private enterprise at the mercy of the government. There are other ways to solve the current problems, though.
In the corporate run system we have now, health insurance companies get their estimates for usual and customary reimbursement rates from two databases. These databases look at each region of the country, and attempt to take in relevant factors that affect costs in the regions, and set the reimbursement rates. Sounds like fair system, right? Except for the fact that both of these databases are wholly owned by United Health care. They are currently being sued in New York for low balling doctors and hospitals by up to 30%. Funny that the premiums they were taking in were not discounted accordingly.
I can empathize with the concern of big government, but we are already so often under the control and influence of big corporate power. Big corporate power frankly frightens me more. Pick your poison, I guess.

The answer ultimately is to restore market forces and to get healthcare dollars directly into people's hands so that they engage in value seeking behavior rather than spending it as third-party money as is the case now. Back in 1965 an apendectomy cost about a week's wages, and that was with a few days of hospital recovery. It's a simpler outpatient procedure now, yet it costs a months wages. How is it that the greedy, relatively unregulated healthcare industry was able to provide such value back then? It seems to me that it had to have something to do there being fewer competition killing regulations in place and less of a government presence to distort the markets. It we want to reform the system without moving to a public or quasi-public (or I should say *more* quasi public) system, the place to start is by detaching healthcare from employers. Start by eliminating the employer health benefit tax exemption, which effectively pumps dollars into the health insurance plans instead of into people's pockets as pay. People spend those health insurance dollars carelessly -- you plunk your insurance card down on the counter and don't even ask how much it's going to cost. If they were your own dollars, OTOH, you'd shop for the best value and prices would come down. All this hubbub about the greedy health insurance companies strikes me mainly as leftist demagogery. I don't see that their profits are out of line with other industries. (Forgive the megaparagraph btw).

3. For several weeks, Beck went on and on about FEMA "camps"; he claimed conservatives might be thrown in these camps. He said he could not dispute these camps, implying that they must exist. Beck later debunked this rumor, but it was after weeks of talking about the camps. Beck also denied having propagated the rumor. Problem is, even though Beck later debunked the camps, he did talk about them for quite awhile, and there are certainly people who believed him and probably still do. This FEMA camp rumor is the source of the "rumors" right now going around that Beck did something unseemly to a young girl one night in 1990. Can anyone disprove this rumor? No. But if the person who started that rumor comes out and says it is a lie, there will still be people out there who believe it to be true. Beck is a liar.
4. Beck has spread the lie that Obama will take away one's guns. Obama has never said this or even hinted that he would take away people's legal guns.
5. Beck has agreed with Sarah Palin that the "death panels" are in the Obama healthcare plan and that they are real. There are no such things in Obama's healthcare plan. This is a lie.

Some of them will have emotional problems for many years before they get somewhat back to normal, if they do at all. For Beck to say that he hates even 10 of them is unconscionable. You think it was bad that Van Jones signed a 9-11 petition; what do you think about Beck hating these 10 9-11 survivors?
3. Recently, a listener called into Beck's show to debate health care. She wanted to tell Beck how he was wrong. Beck wouldn't let her get her point across. He yelled and screamed at her, calling her names, and cutting her off. Beck is the one with the power in the situation; he is the multimillionaire, the radio talk show host, the one who should respect his listeners, even if they disagree with him. But, he showed absolutely no respect for that woman. He hated her because he believed her to be a liberal; he hated her because she disagreed with him on health care.
4. Several weeks ago, Beck was performing a "skit" along with a person with a Nancy Pelosi mask. The Nancy Pelosi character was drinking wine. Beck "joked" about putting poison in her wine. Again, you don't joke about killing someone, especially a sitting speaker of the house whom a lot of people do not like. Beck is a hate monger.

I want to also tell a story of my own about people lying. I knew someone who was a very good employee. He did fine work; people looked up to him.
One day, someone discovered that this person had lied about his education. The guy claimed he had a Master's degree; he also claimed he had a PhD and even went so far as putting the title of "Doctor" in front of his name on company letterhead.
When this was discovered, his boss fired him, even though his boss thought very highly of him. He lied with a lie of massive proportions. That is what Beck does....and it is not just one lie; it is not just one lie one time. And, personally, for me and many ethical people I know, once someone lies with a lie so big, it is hard to believe or trust that person any more.

1. There is a joke, a rumor going around the internet that Beck raped and murdered a woman in 1990. Beck currenty has a lawsuit to shut down the web site that originated the rumor. Do you think this is funny? Obviously, the people who started this rumor think it is. I wouldn't start a rumor like this, but I can understand why they did. Beck uses this same type of technique. He accuses someone of something, and then he tries to force them to prove that they are not guilty of the charge. He did this to House Rep Keith Ellison. In November 2006, Ellison was elected as our first Muslim congressman. Beck asked him to "prove" that he was not working with our enemies. Yes, Beck did say he didn't believe he was, but he felt that way. Beck put the seed into some people's minds that Ellison was a dangerous Muslim terrorist. Yes, there are stupid people out there who believe this crap.
2. Using your logic, anyone can be a comedian. Any bit of hateful criticism could be considered a "joke." I wonder if you think it would be funny if someone were to joke about Beck's mother or a brother, who both committed suicide? Or make fun of another brother who died prematurely of I think heart disease? Make a comment about this, and defend yourself by saying, "oh, it was just a joke!"

You need to learn more about what “socialism” is. There are various forms of it. If we are headed to any form of socialism at all, it would be “Democratic Socialism,” such as they have in Canada and Europe. I lived in “socialist” Europe for 4 years. I had no less freedoms than I have here, except I could not vote because I was not a Dutch citizen. However, they hold free, fair, and open elections. You can buy a house and, in fact, you do not need a down payment on a house…it will not get you any lower interest rate on your loan; you can buy a car; you can eat out at restaurants if you want. You can stage demonstrations and protests if you like. I once saw a huge demonstration of Kurds in Amsterdam, protesting the imprisonment in of their leader Ocalan in Turkey. You would never see that here.
You can start your own business. I know an American who started her own small business in The Netherlands. She’s been there for 10 years, now.
I had to see a doctor twice for minor reasons in The Netherlands. I was not assigned a doctor by the government; in one case my secretary called a doctor for me; in another case, a Dutch friend called another doctor for me. In both cases, I got right in, the same day I called. I had no wait. There were no forms to fill out. In one case, the doctor gave me a prescription which I got filled the same day. In the other case, the doctor told me to get something over the counter which you cannot get here, and it worked.
I had a good Dutch friend with type I diabetes. She did not take care of herself very well because she often drank more than she should at parties. Twice, she got very sick and ended up in the hospital. She got in right away with no delay. Twice, the doctors treated her; twice they saved her life. There were no “death panels” that said she could not be treated because she was irresponsible with her health.
I had another Dutch friend, an elderly lady, who had a stroke a few years ago. She got into the hospital right away. The doctors treated her and saved her life. There were no “death panels” that she couldn’t be treated because she was old.
I heard no complaints from my Dutch friends about their “socialist” health care.
Although I did not partake, prostitution and marijuana are legal in The Netherlands. I did on occasion smoke a few Cuban cigars, which are also not legal here. In some respects, it seems as if there are more “freedoms” in Europe.
You also need to study up on your history of taxation in this country. Taxes right now are the lowest they have been in some 70 years. And look at the economic mess we have been in since the recession started in December 2007. Did you know that for much of the20th century, taxes were very high, and, in fact, during WWII, taxes were as high as 90% or higher? Did you know that George Bush is the first president ever not to raise taxes during a time of war? In spite of taxes being so high in the 20th century, are you telling me there was not spectacular growth? Are you telling me there was not “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?” Are you telling me that during the 20th century, people did not have freedom? I guess women didn’t have the freedom to vote until 1920, and blacks didn’t a lot of freedom until late in the 20th century.
If you are so afraid of “socialism”, what do you think of social security, medicare/Medicaid, and the VA healthcare system?
From what you write, and the fact that it is obvious that you have not read some of my posts about watching Beck, I kind of take it that you might be the “youth.” I am not a young man and possibly am older than you are.

Let me give you the respect of addressing real 1st hand information that you have written to me and do the same for you.
There is a phrase that I first heard in San Jose during the Dot Com boom that goes, "When the wind is strong enough, even turkeys can fly". Of course it was refering to the eventual callapse of all those dot coms based on poor business models. In 2001, the internet security market alone dropped to 33% of what it was in 2000. Many businesses that were showing profits based on investment income, but had little or no sales collapsed. Many small investors lost everything that year. I lost a job, and promptly turned down one at another 'johnny come lately' dot com. Since then the market stabilized and is doing just fine, as am I. Capitalism is harsh, but honest. Not everyone is meant to have the best. When I wasn't working for a living, I wasn't making much of one either. I would have stayed lazy if everything was given freely to me. I'm no saint. I want to get paid for my work, but if I can get paid without working, great! I can do that too! Seems fair to me. How about you? What do you think the average guy or gal would do with their time if they could get free healthcare, free retirement, and free money between jobs? Would they take it? Would they work anyway?
You probably won't admit it, but most people are more than happy to live like leeches. If they play the victim, they can milk a given system for all its worth until it collapses. The Netherlands, for example, is rich on oil. They will fly in that strong wind and look good doing it for many years before they collapse. By that time, corruption will have had plenty of time to set in and all the wonderful wealth of that nation will have been squandered on far more frivolous things than doctors and medicine.
We in the US are already deep in dept. The corruption of our leadership is already well set. We've had good times and poor, but our taxation has not gone down. You are looking at income tax alone. We are taxed in far more ways now than we ever had before. Medicare is a tax, as is Social security, as is the devaluation of the dollar as the government prints up more dept. Locally, states and districts have increased taxes tremendously throughout the United States. It's like when they split up the defense budget and called the other half the energy budget. Its all still defense spending, but the 1/2 called "Defense" looks smaller now. Don't be fooled. Taxes have gone up.
All the same, the government could increase the tax rate to 100% and it would take decades to pay off the dept. In fact, if they did do that, they would probably justify paying for more things and making the payoff take even longer.
I understand that there are many flavors of socialism, but it makes no difference how free you feel. This country was founded on the premis that the government had no right to take power from the people and that the people were ultimately responsible for how they chose to live. The mix of cultures and value systems aside, we have strayed very far from that mark. We now have given government the power to control just about every major resource we have, and now they want to control our very lives.
Like all those Netherlandians, I can go out and protest, say whatever I want (except yell "fire" in a theater or threaten the president's life), and I can buy a business or make one from scratch. Its all very easy while everything is going good. But when the wind stops blowing and all the turkeys are caught in mid-air with no lift, we shall see just who is in charge. I contend, in this country anyway, the people still believe they are in charge and will eat that dead turkey when it hits the ground, and replace it with a bird that can fly on its own.
I don't know what would happen if the Netherlands runs out of that hundreds of billion dollar surplus they are living fat on right now. But it will be interesting to watch.

Sure, some people will take advantage of handouts, but I think it is better to err on the side of helping people rather than on the side of not helping people and perhaps causing an earlier death due to no health care. I’ve done quite well in my career; there were a number of years when I was in the top tax bracket, and I could care less if I paid 36% or 39% income tax. If I ever get back to making that sort of money again, I could care less if it went up even higher, if it were to help out others less fortunate than me. I even heard Bill O’Reilly one time last year claim that he would be happy to pay a little bit more in taxes to help those less fortunate than he is.
Having said that, I also believe that most people would prefer to work and get paid much more than what a welfare system would pay them. You have the opportunity to make substantially more money if you work; you have a lot more social interaction with people; you have a sense of accomplishment that you would not have if you were not working. I simply believe that most people are this way. If I got free healthcare; if I got paid “free money”; I would still want to work because I know from experience, I can make substantially more money than welfare would give me. I am a capitalist as well….that extra money I have made over the years has allowed me to travel to Europe 16 times on vacation (in addition to the 4 years I have worked there); it has allowed me on one of those trips to go to Lillehammer and see the 1994 winter Olympics (very expensive trip); it has allowed me to travel numerous times to New York City, Chicago, Washington D.C., and Memphis, where I have brothers and sisters. That extra money has allowed me to travel 5 times to the island of Kauai for vacation. That extra money has allowed me to buy quite expensive camera equipment for my biggest hobby (next to travel) of photography. That extra money has allowed me to take really nice trips on photo workshops to places like Death Valley, Cambria, the Eastern Sierras, Kauai, and the Smoky Mountains. So, yes, I would gladly work to make substantially more money than I would if I only had welfare and free health care.
Just one point of about 7 or 8 in total! Again, have a good one, and I'll get to those others later.
All I need say to this is, if everyone was like you, then we could socialize everything and everyone would still work. But they aren't and they won't.
My personal financial picture is a tad more blight. I won't deny I work hard for my money, but I don't earn much and I've travelled only rarely. I know far more people like me than like you. If you could support all of us, then please do so. I know you would willingly.
The problem I see is that you think the government is doing that job for you. You are under the false impression that your prosperity need not be interrupted with charity since you are paying taxes and that money is doing the job you are not. It is not.
Politicians are indeed taking your money. They are indeed giving some of it out. But they are spending a great deal more of it on other issues that keep them in power. A vast majority of your gift to them is spent on projects intended to improve their political position and fatten their campaign chests. The beaurocracy eats up a huge percentage as well. Only a small trickle does what the politicians promise it will do.
If I were you, I would not spend one more cent in taxes. I would personally give the money to those that I knew needed it instead. That would be far more than the government could ever do. They are, after all, actually violating the constitution to spend your money on charity.

I agree with some of your points. I know politicians take money to get reelected, and some projects are wasteful; but I also know that much of that money does some good. It does some good that charities cannot fully cover. Even now, in this current economic situation, charities are struggling to get by.
I still would prefer to err on the side of helping someone. That is the way I was raised. I was raised the oldest of 8 kids. My Dad was a teacher. Teachers do not make much money, and my dad took on teaching extra night classes to help the family get by.
In spite of not having much money for a large family, my parents still gave money to charities; they never complained about their taxes and in fact I know they voted for tax increases if they were meant to go to things like schools (keep in mind my Dad was a teacher).
I personally never had much money myself growing up. My first job, other than cutting grass, was as a senior in high school. I continued that job all 4 years of college. The entire time I worked, I made 25 cents more than minimum wage. In college, I worked easily 25 hours or more a week. It was tough, especially working towards an Electrical Engineering degree at a top rated University.
When I graduated from college, I talked to the boss and owner of that company I was working for throughout college. I told him I wanted to stay. I also interviewed at other companies.
Western Electric (AT&T) offered me $29,640 a year; Motorola offered me slightly less than that; that small company I was working for offered me $22,000 a year. I took the latter job, at that small company, because I liked that company. I was not motivated by money. I was motivated by responsibility I would be given; I was motivated by the people I was working with; I was motivated by the nature of the business. That business was a start up cell phone company, and I worked many years in engineering and operations, designing, building, and maintaining cell phone networks. That small company was eventually acquired by a much larger company which itself, several years later, was acquired once again by an even bigger company.
I eventually was transferred to Chicago and then to Europe, and then back to Chicago. My hard work, determination, and willingness to take on huge responsibilities paid off over time. So, like Republicans and Conservatives think, I do believe in personal responsibility; I do believe in capitalism; I support small businesses a lot; but, I also feel strongly about helping those less fortunate than I am. I just strongly believe that many people cannot get out of the desperation they are in, for various reasons.
I do give money every year to charities. My favorite charity is Doctors Without Borders. I also periodically give decent money to my high school and university.
I’d like to tell you why Doctors Without Borders is my favorite charity. First, I have always had an interest in the world. My parents got National Geographic when I was a kid. I had shortwave radios, listening to world radio stations, when I was in high school.
I went to a private, Jesuit high school whose yearly tuition was quite a bit of money for my parents. After I got accepted into that high school, we found out that someone had paid my tuition for the first year. Each subsequent year, someone paid my tuition. My parents never paid a dime for my expensive high school tuition.
We always suspected that it was a neurosurgeon down the street from us, a doctor whose wife is one of my mom’s best friends. He made a lot of money; he gave lots of money to charities and people like my parents who were in need.
After his death a number of years ago, his wife told my mom that he indeed was the one who paid my high school all four years. That doctor’s favorite charity was Doctors Without Borders. So, ever since I found that out, and because I have a strong interest not only in the world, but in helping those less fortunate than I, I have been giving to that charity a lot of money every year.
The last few years, I have done contract work. That type of work has really dried up the last couple of years. So I am not making nearly as much as I once did, working for a large company. In spite of that, I still give the same amount of money to those charities. I am not making as much money, but I do have money saved up. I feel strongly about giving to charities if I can.
I believe there is a lot of greed in this country. Look at what has happened on Wall Street. I saw something yesterday concerning Bank of America, who has been in the news a lot lately about the $6B they gave in bonuses to their executives. I was astounded when I heard that one executive was only hired in I think in June. One month later, when bonuses were handed out, that executive was handed a $29M bonus. Absolutely ridiculous. There is too much greed in this country.
People give to charities; but some are greedy and do not give any; charities struggle today because of the economy…people are not giving as much. I truly believe that if taxes go away, or at least just get lowered, some charities will no longer be able to survive. Then, what happens to those people that charities have helped in the past?
I also truly believe that there frankly aren’t enough jobs to give everybody in this country if you include all of those on welfare, even in good times.
I am not wealthy; I am not anywhere close to being a millionaire; I have done well, though. I also know many people, including most in my family, who have not done nearly as well as I have. Yet, most of them do not complain about taxes. Notably, this includes my 7 brothers and sisters, 6 of whom have never made close to what I have. Most of my friends are probably like you and your friends; they work hard for their money day after day; most of my friends voted for Obama and still support him. Two of my friends are Republicans and do not like Obama or his policies….I argue with one of them quite often about this whole situation.
Once again, I know there is waste in the government, but even when Obama was trying to get his stimulus package pushed, I recall Republicans pointing out things they considered to be “pork,” yet if you looked at the amount of money being spent on that pork, it was a small percentage of the total. About the bureaucracy eating up that money, I don’t have any figures on this. But I do know that when it comes to healthcare, I have heard that insurance companies take as much as 30% for overhead, and I’ve heard that programs like Medicare take far, far less. Government employees do not get the huge, multimillion dollar bonuses that corporate executives get. I seriously, seriously doubt government employees would get a bonus anywhere close to what even non-executives sometimes get (I made some good bonuses over the years). So I’m not sure if the overhead for government is really high.
I’ll try to get to those other points soon…..I typed those up on another computer; I’m in my living room with my laptop watching TV right now.

It appears we agree for the most part that the government is not the most efficient means of supporting those in need, and that charities (again - for the most part) are. I would add that charities, by their very nature, must be efficient in their funnelling of funds from givers to the needy. If givers do not percieve that their gifts are being used as promised, they will simply stop giving. I would also add that government, by its very nature, does not reward good behaviour on the part of those programs that help the needy, but also do not punish them for wasteful behaviour. They will, however, punish behaviour from a program, regardless of its success, for bringing bad press. Bad press will defund a program no matter how good or bad it is.
I've seen many a wasteful program that was rewarded with larger and larger budgets because it reported higher and higher needs of the people. I've watched as the California school budget grew into the billions and student test scores dropped to 49th of 50 states. I've seen first hand how emergency funds have been spent at amazing rates, increasing some company's income, but the products sit and are wasted at the taxpayers expense. I would never trust the government to do a job where efficiency was an issue. They are good at loyalty though. Call someone out for bad practices and you will get put out. Especially if it makes the organization look bad IN THE PRESS.
You say charities are struggling lately. I agree. Of course, they struggle often, but that just means they are less likely to be wasteful. I see Obama's policies as making gifts to charities taxable money. This will likely mean people will not give to charities. I also see that he wants people to give government money as if it was a charity. That is just amazingly rediculous. The government is about as far from being a charity as you can get. They have the power to produce money out of thin air. They waste that money as if it was thin air. They are no charity. My hard work is devalued by government waste. I will gladly give to a charity, but you have to force me to pay taxes. Don't get me wrong. I love my country, but those in charge can go to hell. They are as corrupt as I've seen since Nixon. I thought Bush was bad with his liberal agenda pretending to be conservative, but Obama is literally taking over whole industries to siphon funds into government.
Let me tell you, Medicare isn't going to last much longer. This healthcare bill is simply a means of redefining Medicare such that the government can tax us more heavily. It will most definitly not save any money as Obama has promised. Those "massive" CEO salaries amount to less than .4% of the cost of healthcare. I promise you that the beaurocracy that will be created to control a new healthcare program nationwide will be at least an order of magnitude higher than that. Then there is all the "wasteful" practices that government wants to eliminate. I work in a hospital. There is little to no incentive to be wasteful here. If there was somewhere, then I am sure that business would naturally be undercut by another that could give the healthcare at a cheaper rate. That is the nature of a competitive free market. When government takes over, it will not have to compete. It will, by it's very nature, be far more wasteful than any company could ever get away with. I'm not talking about this because I've heard someone else talking about it. I've seen it in the Army, in Washington, where I worked for 1/2 a year (and we must get rid of the state department -that would save us a couple billion right there), and in private industry.
Let me tell you, if someone is dying and needs a one-time use tool like a catheter that costs $20,000, then I do not consider that waste. Someone did alot of precision measuring and developing very expensive materials to create a specific tool for that patient. That device is doing a job that can not be done cheeper than that. We may not like the fact that some patients get such expensive care, then die after only a few months because they don't value their health as much as the hospital does, but I assure you, most of them do value their lives and many survive procedures and live much better lives afterwards.
I can see a government hospital giving the same care (assuming it could), but the patients not valuing their health nearly as much since it didn't cost much to them and the government has promised to ALWAYS cover the cost no matter how the patient treats himself. Maybe the government will see the waste in this and create new rules stating that people that do not take care of themselves will get a lower priority for surgery. The government just added more beaurocracy to check on how people are living, monitoring priority of patients, punishing violators, etc, which all costs money but doesn't add one iota of value to healthcare. That is the one of the basic problems of government run operations which make it so inefficient.
I know a free society has problems too, but at least the power is spread out among many people and problems are solved at a much lower level. Socialism is just another system, but it is expensive, and it consolidates resources at the top, and thereby consolidates power at the top. By doing so, socialism is prone to dictatorships. Remember Stalin? It didn't take long after Lenin before a dictator took control. After Stalin, they didn't have another dictator that bad again, but they did waste nearly every resource Russia had at an alarming rate. I am part Russian as well. My grandfather saw communism rise and ran for freedom. I have him to thank, and now I must return the favor for my son by ensuring freedom remains for my children.

However, while, like you, I do believe strongly in hard work, responsibility, determination, innovation, taking risks; I also know many people cannot do this for various reasons. Many are born into poverty; some can get out of it; others struggle and cannot. Some are born into bad neighborhoods which some cannot get out of. Some are born into bad school districts and for economic reasons cannot move or go to a private school. Some have bad parents. Some are born with mental illness or physical disabilities; others grow up and develop mental illness or get physical disabilities. Some make poor choices in life, and while some can recover from those choices, others struggle to do so and cannot get back on their feet. Some are hit with hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and forest fires; some have insurance to help, but some have insurance which won’t cover what they thought they had. Some have health insurance, but some of those who thought they had good health insurance find out their policies won’t cover past a certain point; some have pre-existing conditions and cannot get health insurance, or their insurance gets cancelled. Others simply have no insurance to start with for various reasons. And, as mentioned, there are simply not enough jobs in this country to give everyone a job. There will always be some percentage of unemployment, and we should help those people, as we should help those unfortunates listed above.
I don’t think I said that charities are more efficient than governments are, although I tend to believe this. However, what I did say was that Medicare’s overhead is a lot less than what Health Insurance overhead is. I’ve seen figures that overhead for Health Insurance companies is as high as 30%; overhead for Medicare is a lot less. In other words, in this case, Medicare is actually much more efficient than health insurance companies are.
Another example: I remember when I worked for a big company, I had automatic payroll deductions to give to the United Way. I was very shocked to see how much some of the management of the United Way got paid. It was obscene. I felt like cancelling my payroll deductions, but the company kind of “encouraged” people like me in management to contribute.
Some say that individuals can decide how best to spend their money, meaning that they can choose which charities they want to give to better than the government. While true, I also believe that if there were no taxes, or lower taxes, many people will not give to charities at all, even with the savings they would get with lower or no taxes.
You say that when times are tough for charities, they will be less likely to be wasteful. For some, the inefficiently run, that may be true. But, for many others, that simply is not true. My favorite charity, Doctors Without Borders, has very low overhead; don’t remember what it is, but it is low, and if people reduce their charity to them, they will hurt. I just do not believe this argument.
I believe that healthcare is a right, not a privilege. If I have to pay more in taxes to get it, I have no problem in doing so in order to provide universal health care in this country. We are the only industrialized country in the world which does not have some form of universal health care, and that, to me, is a moral issue.
The people who by far pay the most taxes in this country are the wealthiest. Some very small percentage of people pay a very large percentage of all taxes. You and I are not in that group. Those wealthy are the ones who would share the largest burden in taxes to help with health care and other things which help people.
I’m wondering if you support huge defense spending? There is waste in that area as well. Over the years, you often heard about things like toilets for the military that cost, say, $20,000 a piece. No bid contracts are very often given out. In the Iraq war, some 8.8 billion dollars in cash just “disappeared” in Iraq. It just disappeared. I’m not talking about a million here, a million there, over 6 years that added up to 8 billion; I’m talking about 8 billion in cash almost all at one time. It was money entrusted to the Coalition Provisional Authority (Paul Bremer) which was supposed to go to various Iraqi ministries for rebuilding the country. No one knows where it went; it has never been found. How would you propose to fix things like this? Certainly, we would not be able to start a charity that would provide for fighting wars or nation building. Even if you could start a charity to fund wars, half of this country wouldn’t contribute to it for a war like Iraq. (silly example, but hope you get my point….there are many things you don’t want to pay taxes for; there are things like preemptive wars that I don’t want to pay taxes for…maybe you don’t either, so that makes 2 of us.)
As far as some of your other points, I just do not know how to answer them, Greg. I mean, come on….get rid of the State Department? I just don’t know what to say.
I’ve seen others compare our current situation to Communist Russia with talk about Lenin and Stalin. I just do not know how to respond to this other than that was close to 90 years ago. Very different circumstances than today.
I do not like government waste; it needs to be reduced and fixed. But by cutting all taxes or programs, or severely limiting them, I just do not see how this would be possible. How are you going to pay for police and fire departments? How are you going to pay for building new highways and fixing existing roads? How are you going to build new public transportation systems or maintain and grow existing new ones like the Washington D.C. Metro (the tea party people last weekend complained about the Metro being too crowded, but these people are the same who do not want government involvement)?
And, once more, I lived in Europe for 4 years. I loved it. Yes, taxes are a lot higher than they are here, and social welfare programs are significantly much more prevalent than they are here (and much more money is spent on them); but I really believe they take better care of their people through universal healthcare and other social programs than we do. I do not advocate doing exactly what they do, but, frankly, we’re not even close to what they do in terms of taxes and government spending. As I’ve said before, their Democratic socialism is not evil; it is nothing like the socialism in the Soviet Union that some say we are marching towards. It is absolutely nothing like the “socialists” in Nazi Germany who were socialists primarily in name only.
One last thing….you say that Obama is taking over whole industries. That simply is not true. Yes, there have been bailouts of certain banks, of certain auto companies. However: A)Some of these financial institutions were allowed to fail; B)some of these auto companies were allowed to be sold to foreign companies; C)only 2 auto companies, GM and Chrysler, were bailed out…Ford got its own line of credit; D) many banks who received the bailouts have already made a $4 billion profit for the government, and they will repay their bailout money in the next year to 18 months and will no longer be indebted to the government; E)The last bailout was 3 months ago, with GM….I have heard no more talk about bailing out any more businesses; and F)Obama himself has said he would not bailout California.
I believe very strongly that we can keep our American way of life and, at the same time, improve the way we help the less fortunate than we are. I believe very strongly that you need a mixture and a balance between government spending and no intervention by government.
And, as mentioned above, I believe strongly that healthcare is a right and not a privilege.

I think I do see where you are going. I am convinced that people like Glenn Beck want Obama to die. Beck is a huge gun and militia supporter; I am quite sure he wants someone to take a shot at Obama, just like people did to Lenin. Then, Joe Biden can become President, or, if he can't make it, Nancy Pelosi could. They could intern people in camps and kill millions, like Stalin did with his Gulag. You know, Beck and people like Michelle Bachmann have talked a lot about these "camps" they think Obama is building.
Yesterday, I read about how child actor turned religious whacko Kirk Cameron will be handing out 50,000 free copies of Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species" books in late November. However, these copies of the book will have a 50 page preface discussing how evolution is bad and creationism is good; in fact, that preface will discuss how Hitler got his ideas from Darwin, and therefore, Darwin is bad.
You know, you can come up with conspiracy and comparison theories all you want. In fact, maybe I can start some theory that George Bush wanted to turn his administration into Nazis. After all, Prescot Bush did business with the Nazis....so George W. wanted to continue the tradition.

Lets please keep this civil and sane. Suggesting Beck wants Obama dead lends itself to not being able to take anything else you may say seriously. Lets stick to the facts of the policy and realize that everyone is human and prone to error. That includes Beck, Obama, you and of course myself.
That being said, thanks for reprinting your previous email. I think we can move forward and away from raw emotion, suggestion and speculation and back to what model of society makes for a free, happy people.
I'm still going to promote the idea that there will always be a minority of people that will never rise above the gutter. They will settle for little and not want for much more if any. I believe as the founding father's did, that freedom does not give you what you need to survive, but will not take it from you as you work towards it. The U.S. was built and prospers because of the hard working people, and those people have the right to live well for their effort. Those poor in spirit, poor in work ethic, poor in judgement, prosper only at the good will of those that are doing well already for themselves and their families.
I can vouch for the fact that, thou we had little extra money, our family reached out regularly to support organizations that helped the poor. We did so willingly and it made us feel good to do so. I've often taken beggars out to eat at fast food places. I've been swindled by beggars before, but it has not stopped me from giving to others.
I remember communism under Breshnev and how the state taxed the workers at a rate of 60%, which they paid before they got their own paychecks. They marched in large parades and vowed their lives to the state, and some even believed that the squaller that they lived in was like a status symbol of their giving to the state and the good of the people as a whole.
But where there successful people in the USSR like there were here? Yes of course! One was the brothers that developed all the jet aircraft for the Soviets. They were very successful and lived well, as well as the state would allow. If they could have, they would have wanted to live much better. They may have been even more successful had they the belief that their success would somehow be rewarded. As it was, their greatest reward was knowing that their beloved country was barely keeping up with the U.S. in jet technology, sometimes surpassing them for a moment, but not often.
What of the poor in communist Russia? There were many just as there are everywhere. They continued to do poorly in life. They also lived in squallor as the workers did. In fact, it was not long before most of the working class looked just like the poor. A massive base supporting a very few.
Those that did best, of course, were in the politburo. They had the power, and therefore were able to gather the wealth.
All of this was done in the name of the people. It was a noble idea by Marx that could not be implemented primarily because we are not all the same, so we can not ever get to a point where the rich and smart can be forced to support the poor. They may be happy to do so willingly, but if you force them, they will naturally fall short.
That and the fact, that is reinforced with every new administration and government, that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. If we allow the government to print money, tax us into poverty and we have no means of stopping them, then they will naturally become corrupt, as they did in the USSR. The closer we get to their model, the closer we come to their conclusion. They collapsed. Communism was toppled and Lenin's statues were destroyed. I remember before the fall of the USSR some pictures we had of a statue in Leningrad that was just amazing. My first wife was from Moscow. She told me of accounts first hand where people were spraypainting nasty messages on the statues near red square. I understand the great statue in St Petersburg (after it regained its old name) was torn down and demolished. Of course there were still people that believed in the dream of socialism, but they were quiet as they watched their ruble destroyed on the free market and new capitalists (and mobsters!) rebuild Moscow from the ashes. Now the Pravda mocks the US for falling for the same trick. Check out the article in the english version of hte Pravda online.

If you don't believe our federal government is running towards socialism and corruption, I could argue successfully I might add, all day about the fact that it is. If you support Obama and personalize his plight as the 1st black president, then I respect your desire to give him a chance. All I would say is that eventually, all the racism in the world will not keep him in office if he continues to run our economy into the ground and remove more of the people's freedom via policy. If he were to back up his claim that congress will become transparent, then I might even want him to stick around, but so far his campaign has been nothing but empty promises. Even Gitmo doesn't appear to be removable in his 1 year promise. We shall see.
Personally, its all about performance to me. If he does poorly, he should be gone, regardless of his race. One thing I will give him is that he is one helova speaker.

Even some conservatives think he is bad for the republican party. You know that beck has called Obama a "racist" and a person with a "deep seated hatred of white people" in spite of the fact that his mother and beloved grandmother were both white. Well, about one month after he said this, I saw beck on O'Reilly's show, and he told O'Reilly that the use of the word "racist" is overblown and shouldn't be used. What a damned hypocrite.
Please tell me what other businesses the federal government has taken over in recent months so we know just how far down the road we are going towards socialism.
As far as corruption, every administration has had corruption; Obama's certainly will be no different. I have been hearing about one of bush's appointees is being investigated...she helped some big oil company (think Shell), and after she left the administration (while bush was still in office), she took a high ranking job at that company.
I don't care about Obama's race. People like limbaugh have said that, before the election, we were being "told" to vote for Obama because his father was a black man....that is pure hogwash. Sure, some probably voted for him because he is of mixed race, but that's not why I voted for him.
And, yes, it's his performance that counts. People, especially conservatives and republicans, are bashing Obama, but bush left him with so many messes....I think he is doing ok.

About transparency, no, Obama isn't completely transparent in everything, but he certainly is much more transparent than bush.
About "empty" promises, every president has "empty" promises. There's no way in heck Obama is going to meet all of his goals the first year. I knew that. But at least he is trying. Just last week, for example, congress voted to allow GITMO prisoners to come to U.S. soil for trials. That's a start to getting them out of GITMO.
I thought that Bush and Cheney promised that we would be greeted as "liberators" in Iraq. I will tell you this much: the single biggest thing I hate Bush for is starting the Iraq war. It not only was an immoral war based on at best bad evidence and at worst based on lies; it took troops and focus away from Afghanistan, which is another extreme mess bush left Obama with. I am really pissed at bush for doing this. Obama is damned if he pulls troops; he is damned if he adds more troops to Afghanistan. You can bash Obama all you want, but it's that damned bush that got us into so many messes Obama has to try to clean up.
And, you know what? Bush fired one of his budget guys before the Iraq war because that guy told bush the Iraq war would cost up to $200 billion dollars. Bush did not like that answer and thought it should be much less. So he fired the guy. We'll be spending a trillion or more in that damned war. Further, bush is the only President in our history who did not raise taxes in a time of war. Yes, Obama is raising the deficit, but Bush's tax cuts for the very wealthy started us on this path.
Obama is far from perfect, but he was left with many serious messes, and at least he is trying things to fix them.

I just thought of something else I have forgotten to add. I keep seeing that we spend by far the highest per capita in healthcare than any other country. Yet, we are the only industrialized country that does not provide healthcare for all of its citizens.
I also often see statistics, from credible sources, including the CIA factbook, that in certain health-related areas, we are not even close to being the best in the world. That includes life expectancy (I think we are something like 30th or 35th) and infant mortality, where we also are not close to being the lowest (I think, again, around 30th highest).
Things like this tell me that universal healthcare can work well with government involvement and can in fact be better and more efficient than one like ours that has insurance companies, motivated by profit and not by taking care of people’s health. Why do we spend so much m ore per capita, yet do not have the “best” in certain areas, and do not cover everybody? I have never heard a good explanation from anyone of why this is.
Also, one other point….there are government grants that go to hospitals and other institutions to do research. I believe that various institutions need to compete for these grants, which come from taxes. I have a brother-in-law who runs a lab at St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis. I believe he has to write up proposals every year, or every so often, in order to try to get some of those grants. I don’t really see how charity alone can help provide funding for things like this.

In one of my posts, I mentioned that I have watched Bill O'Reilly's show often. I have done so for 7 years.
Recently, Bill O'Reilly had Beck on to discuss the incident where Beck yelled and screamed at that woman who called in to discuss healthcare. O'Reilly actually showed the video; it wasn't just audio. I have personally seen Beck show videos of Nazis marching, all the while talking about Obama. That is a direct comparison of Obama to Nazis. Idiots have shown up at town halls with pictures of Obama next to Hitler or Obama with a Hitler mustache. Once again, if you think this is a "joke," you are sick. Most decent people don't make Nazi comparisons. Beck, of German descent, likely would be thrown in jail if he did this in Germany.

I've got some REAL issues with Beck myself...I'm trying to figure out if he was as aggressive in complaining about Patriot Act trampling of individual rights/The Constitution as he has been in his present defense of The Constitution and its survival.
I'm glad you have "real"issues with Beck; however, Beck is a race baiter himself. He called Obama a "racist" who has a "deep seated hatred of white people." This is in spite of the fact that Obama's mother and beloved grandmother were both white. This is race baiting. I'm sure it infuriated many black people; it infurated many white people like myself that he called our President a "racist."
Further, Beck has himself insinuated the advocacy of armed insurrection. He is a big supporter of the 2nd Amendment; he is a big supporter of militias; he has publicly made a number of statements in support of militias. Beck has also talked about "revolution." At times, he has seemed to encourage states like Texas to secede.
I don't like guns myself, but I'm not going to trample on people's right to own legal guns; however, it is not right for Beck to promote guns and militias and at the same time talk about revolution and make very disparaging remarks about Obama (such as him being a Nazi); Beck's language can encourage just one crazy to go on a mission to try to assassinate Obama because he thinks he is a Naz or thinks that Obama will take away his guns.

Beck is way over the top many times. Frankly, one of the reasons there is so much discord and division in this country right now is because of hatred and lies that people like Beck spew. Cass Sunstein, on the other hand, is not going to become President. At best, he is going to provide advice that is going to be blended in with a large pool of other advisers. To treat him as though he deserves equivalent scrutiny to Sarah Palin is absurd. And, I think if she hadn't received the press coverage she had, you'd be calling it bias, too.
The fact of the matter is that Cass Sunstein is a moderate, whose influence is going to be relatively minor, but whose willingness to work with Republicans makes him a good influence on the Obama Administration, overall.
Beck is going after him because he seems vulnerable. He's not trying to protect you or me from Cass Sunstein, he is trying to find odd sounding quotes out of thousands of pages, to take him down. And, at the end of the day, it is going to be Republicans who lose the most... because Sunstein is one of the least partisan people in the administration.
But you wouldn't know that if you listen exclusively to Beck.
This is just Republican Partisanship strutting around in the guise of public interest.
Sunstein was only trying to make a point about "opting-in" vs "opting-out"--when people opt-in, you get lower participation because non-donation is the default setting--and this example can be applied to many, many situations where people don't simply care enough either way, but we assume that their apathy is opposition. In terms of military service, the government assumes that most people aren't pacifists, but you may "opt out" if you are. If Sunstein had used THIS example, as opposed to the British example of organ donation, there would be no complaint.
But, of course, Glenn Beck is going to twist this into some paranoid rant on how Big Brother wants to steal your kidneys.
It's sad, because Sunstein is actually a very sensible, respectable, and moderate figure in the Democratic Party, who works closely with conservative philosophers.
Don't conclude that because Limbaugh or Beck say something that it is the Republican Party.
